Thinking about....

The possibility of buying a new detector in the next few weeks. Got any suggestions? Don't want to spend mega bucks since I don't get to detect as often as I'd like, but don't want a junker either. I will not be doing water detecting, so don't factor that in when you give me suggestions. Just old home sites, old farms, school playgrounds... typical stuff. Relics, coins, jewelery, etc. Don't really want anything complicated that will require hours and hours of reading and tinkering to figure it out. Takes all the fun out of it for me when I've used detectors that took a PhD to operate. All that balancing, and technical mumbo jumbo ain't for me. Just thought I'd ask for suggestions since many of you have newer detectors and/or have used a variety of them. Oh, and I don't want anything HEAVY. I'm not as large as some of you guys and don't need something bigger than me! lol

Lisa

Us large guys have used a ace 250 ha ha, if you want light, for better discrimination use the GTP1350, easy to use, mid range price! Good Luck!

What machine do you have now? Then I can give you all sorts of ideas, and a good place to buy from.

I don't know what your price range is, but I really like my Minelab X-Terra 70. It is light, a turn on and go machine and it can be fine tuned to where it can pick up very small nuggets to about the size of #4 lead shot. All the dealers are selling off the 70 now because the "new" 705 is out and they want to clear out old stock for the new one with all the new whistles and bells! You can get a great deal on a 70 if you can find one now and I don't plan on upgrading mine because it is a very good machine. All the X- Terra upgrades have added a "5" to their number to indicate it is the new model. BTW, Gerry's Detectors of Boise has a new X-Terra 50 I was going to buy for a backup and so I could have a partner go with me. BUT plans change. Gerry is one our sponsors here on Find Mall, tell him you want the same deal on that 50 he was going to give me IF you contact him. Feel free to use my name and he IS a great guy.

It is much like asking-- which is better a Ford or Chevrolet?

I normally would not get involved in debates like this, but since this is my favorite forum I will add my 2 cents. I have been using a detector for well over 40 years and have had the opportunity to use many brands.

I would suggest you look at Tesoro Silver uMax or the Tesoro Compadre. No bells or whistles. Very, very simple to use with about 10 minutes of reading the instruction book you can be hunting. Inexpensive. LIGHTwieght. Excellent depth. Frequency is favorable for finding jewelry. The best warranty of all companies.

My wife is small and 60 years old and she decided last year to try detecting. I purchased a Compadre for her and within minutes she was detecting and finding coins.

I have some of my best finds in over 40 years with the Silver Max and it cost about $250 brand new.

Best of Luck, Bryan

Yeah, I knew that before I asked! lol But I figured I'd get lots of opinions and then use them to do some research before making a decision. Actually, I did some reading a few months ago about the Tesoro you mentioned and thought it might be right for me... then I looked at some others and thought the same thing. It is definitely in the running! Thanks for the input; I appreciate it.

Thanks, Mark. This is one I haven't looked at yet but I will check it out for sure.

I have the same detector I've had for the past 100 years... well, the last 10 or 12, anyway. It's a Troy Shadow x2. It has always worked very well for me. GREAT depth, and has, MANY times, found things that other detectors passed right over. Light weight and exceptionally simple to operate. The last two times I used it, it was starting to give me some problems. I'd like to have it fixed but as old as it is, I figure I'd be better off to just buy a new detector.

Rick, for some reason, I do feel a little drawn to Garrett - no idea why. I'm far from making a decision, but a Garret is right up there at the top of my list. Thanks!

Hey Lisa...I have two detectors, a Whites and a Fisher Coinstrike. The Whites is a turn on and go, no ground balancing required. A couple of years ago Mike from Mi contacted a company that gives away a detector every year to a child and they chose Brian. The detector they sent was an Ace 250. I am really impressed with this little machine, it's light weight, well balanced and a great coin hunter. Brian used it mainly in tot lots so I don't know how deep it is but I did try it in our yard and found a couple of pennies that I missed with both of my other machines. It is inexpensive too!! I don't hunt like I used to so haven't been studying the newer machines and there are probably other machines similar to the Ace on the market now.

Tanks for the input, Doug, I haven't really looked at the Whites just yet, but will check them out. On the Ace 250, any idea how it is for relics?

Lisa

Hi Lisa, I really cannot suggest anything in the line of detectors that are newer! I have only used White's brands and have used the Spectrum XLT since 1994 and have found loads of coins with it! You can use it right away with the preprograms already in it or you can program it for your own special programs.....I doubt if it goes as deep as the Minelabs and etc. but I don't care to dig deep, especially in parks where I might have gotten run out! But I really liked it and still do if and when I do go detecting! It is very light by using the hip mount, but I use it on my chest or upper side because I am very short and being older, I can't handle a heavy one either! The only thing you would proabably have to buy a used one, but White's does have newer ones that probably are just as good and maybe detect deeper since their Spectrum XLTs!

I don't expect to update mine, but just have it repaired if anything should go wrong with it, which I have done, should I be able to go :detecting: again! Good luck on a new detector and May God Bless you with many, many nice goodies and lots of digging with your new Christmas gift digger! Amen! :) Ma Betty

You didn't give any indication how much you want to pay. I'd suggest the White's MXT if you want to go that price range. I love that detector. It's so easy to use and the relic mode is wonderful. I've heard that in a cheaper detector that the new Coinmaster rocks. The Garrett's Ace 250 was getting all the ratings in that price range but now folks are saying the Coinmaster beats it. I have no experience with it though.

Maybe get a simple Ace 250 as a back up and send the other one out to be checked out when you have the new one.
the Ace is easy to use and light weight. How much do you want to spend? If i were you I would get one that has ID and depth.

I'm sorry Lisa, but I haven't tried it relic hunting. I bought the Coinstrike for relic hunting because it is a very deep machine but it does have a steep learning curve.

The Ace 250 has ID and depth, doesn't it. Don't have the specs in front of me, but I'm thinking it does.....? How is the Ace on depth?

Lisa

As for price range, I really don't want to go more than $450-$500, if that much. I wouldn't mind going higher if I was able to detect more often than what I am. I usually get out 3-4 times a month. Sometimes more, sometimes less, and usually for only a short time. I used to detect a lot more often and for longer periods of time, but I'm not able to do that anymore.

Lisa

superfast, superlight, and very deep!!!
