i couldn't find anything and turned on a catholic station on the satellite.anyway it was about this polish priest ministering to catholics in albania and trying to teach them some basics because of the effects of communism and supression of liberties.well,as i watched the priest drove a landrover because he had to cross a river that flowed at different levels depending on rain or snow melt so sometimes the church would be isolated.

i noticed that the people lived simply, raising chickens and goats and some cooked on woodstoves and lived in masonary homes that were probably several generations old.the outside of the church seemed to be a social gathering spot for kids and teenagers, and i noticed there weren't any fat kids, the area was mountainous.i never saw a television or satellite dish and i'd bet most didn't have a car.i remembered how it was a my grandparents on my mothers side in nebraska.

no running water, just a sistern outside, they would get water from a neighbors well to drink, usually in milk cans.they did wash by hand,i think they had a wringer setup with a tub underneath.the women didn't have sanitary napkins back then hence the slang term for when they experienced their monthly aggravation.

i'm sure many of your parents lived a similiar lifestyle when they were growing up so i'm not telling you anything new.so this show made me think that they were living like my mom and her folks.my granddad would raise rabbits to eat,he grew up hunting them and just liked rabbit.

my mother said if he bought some fish in town he would say he had caught it with his silver hook:).it made me think maybe they are better not worse off,not hammered with news and images that are negative,no outside influences for their parents to deal with, maybe a little bored:lol:.but i had all kinds of stuff to choose from as a kid and i still got bored.heck, some of the most fun i had was playing imaginary baseball games hitting rocks with a splintered board where i was always the star:)

i guess i'm saying i think simplier is better sometimes though i appreciate alot of the advantages that the modern world brings.

i am sure he would agree with you also.
I don't have a problem with most modern conveniences except TV and media, they are tough on the young folk, very insidious pablum that can prevent them from thinking for themselves which is tough for kids anyway.

I sure remember the life of cream cans, root cellars, and entertaining oneself.

sugarcoats things, makes everyone and everything out to be good.sometimes good means different things to different people.i think parents and families should be the main influence.they are the ones who will have to pick up the pieces if something gets broken.

i don't know if its because i'm getting older but i'm begining to despise professional sports and everything about it even though i watch out of sheer boredom and the position i'm in right now.i'd rather shoot pool and carry on a converstion with someone.it's a tired ol' saying but i wish i knew then what i know now:).

I can fish, hunt, grow my own food..... No mortgage so that millstone is gone. With all the subprime problems and strife in the world, all in all, we are pretty insulated from it up here. We have a few chickens and this year we may get a couple of veal to raise on our land. Got our own river so , even if the well has problems, we will not run out of water.

As to television... I went without for decades... tried for a couple of months last year and dropped it again. Life is just too short to spend watching someone elses' [imaginary] life. I would prefer to live my own. Can you imagine just how enriching life could be if television had lived up to what it could have been. Somehow, they took a wrong turn and now try to feed us the pap that you hear about.

fashion rules to follow,or at least no one to judge you for it:).thats what i meant saying knowing then about now.no celebrity or sports icon ever paid my rent, but they have money to burn.i'd have used my time more constructively.i say a study that younger people are on the internet more than television watching but both take away from your own fulfillment, especially when your young.it seems i watched more in my 20's than my pre-teen and teenage years.

to be said for the simpler times but I don't want to go back.

My mother was born on a small farm in SD in 1916 and the oldest of 6. Her mother died when she was 15. Very tough life for sure. She told me the other day that she never had a birthday party until she moved to Michigan and never had much of a christmas. One year an orange and another a string of beads. Rough times for sure

It is amazing to me to hear people speak of a particular show like it was THIER own experience. Even more amusing, is the look you get
when they hear you aren't a fellow drone that follows and knows every nuance of that particular show. Not for us, Buddy. Spent most
of my time getting debt free. Now we are on the verge of seeing how THAT experience plays out for them.

my mom has the best disposition for having put up with the crap she did in her life,i almost never heard her complain about anything.i guess because she grew up with nothing and it didn't do anygood.the generation that fought ww2 and lived through the depression.i sometimes wonder if their lives changed very much because of the depression.

live without it altogether, but not Scott. He eats and sleeps with one on. There is a TV in every room in this house with the exception of 2 bathrooms and a laundry room!!!!

myself and about 7 other people pick against the line made by sports books during the NFL season just as a friendly competition to see who can win the most games during the season.if it wasn't for that i don't think i'd have watched much football this year.
