I went back to that beach and found 2 rings both look to be good jewlrey just need cleaned and some coins..

I was confused about something and if someone could clear this up for me I would be grateful..

I discriminated against everything but 40-44 ...so 36 and down I was discriminating against. I would hit a target and it would give me a 40 solid. I switch back to AM and get a conformation 40..so i dig and find a lincoln???????? why did the penny give me a 40. they most times came in lower than that..

Hi Hoss-

Congrats on your success with your Xterra.

First, it's not my practice to second guess anyone's discrimination preferences as I have a lot to learn myself. I am curious though as to why you have limited your finds to that range? There sure could be some goodies under the coil like gold and smaller silver targets at your beach.

In response to your question, a detector produces it's audio and visual responses based on an assessment of a a target's size, shape, and conductivity. Fancy way of saying best guess... All of those things can be influenced by the environment, depth and condition of the target, and the detectorist.

I have found many highly corroded zinc pennies that registered in the dime range. I have also found silver dimes that registered lower on the scale because they were sideways in the ground. Being too impatient or careless with my sweep speed or keeping my coil level has also sent me chasing ghosts that I was sure were those good "whispers". Your photo shows what looks like a clipped edge coin. Try listening to it at a few different angles in comparison to a similar coin in good condition.

Wet ground can also affect your detector's performance. It's amazing how a "hunted out" site will give up the goods after a good rain.

In any case, giving yourself a little wiggle room for the exceptions and not relying strictly on the target ID numbers will pay off with great finds.

When you hunt a fresh water beach scoop everything but iron. Who knows how much gold you passed up? Gold is what you want.

well again Im real green here so my thinking was -since there is alot of pull tabs and trash in the ground at this beach I wanted to not waste time digging Lincolns or pull tabs. I thought since I was pulling many quarters out yesterday that I would discriminate more and just pull dimes quarters and silver if it was there. I am sure I missed a lot of stuff because I heard many faint ghost whispers and i went on..I had not much time..but im learning here.I do listen for the sweet tones-- and I just glance at the display .tell me more about the gold..Im very interested in your thoughts here..so a rain will help HUH good info..

Dig all positive numbers. Even if the tones are broken. If you don't have a sand scoop then get one. It takes just seconds to scoop a target to see if it's trash or treasure. You WILL recover a lot of foil and tabs. But that's where the gold hides. Those quarters won't look too good next to a nice gold ring. So what if you scoop 100 tabs. The 101 might be gold!

Hoss a lot of gold rings with big stones will come in at a very low number, like 8, 10 12. Wedding bands will do this because there is minimal gold. I would bet that most of the smaller gold will be in the nickel range. I too hunt a freshwater beach often and I dig everything in the plus side khouse was giving great advice as usual.

excellent thanks for the advise Gents.. This beach is not sand its rock and some as big as a brick to as small as big sandy material. so its kinda tough. I cant get the detector close to the ground in most places. I just hover as close as i can. when good tone is acquired I move the stones with my foot and then dig the best I can..Its not real bad but I have to wear some modified catchers knee guards to protect my knees. I guess I kinda look like a storm trooper when Im hunting.lol.BUT today I am going to a sandy beach and this advice is great thank you guys..

Buy not checking out the lower iffy signals you will be passing up some gold.Pull tabs are the same as some rings!

Since you pulled so many high conducting targets including 2 silver rings I'll bet there is a ton of jewelry left.

Congrats on the great finds! 2 rings make for a very good day.

As everybody has said. Dig all positive signals at the beach. Good luck to you, Beale.

I got my hind end kicked today...1 qaurter and 2 lincolns and thats it..I went to a different place. forgot to take my 6 inch coil..and i was going crazy chasing targets in the sand...I got hot. I was wearing the wrong clothes ( black pants leather boots and today it got to 80 so i was not comfortable. I am going to rest a couple days then go back to the rock garden and apply the theory and wisdom you fellas have been so willing to share..New Toy I need to slow down a little for sure..Im to anxious to find the world and its right under me..HUH I think i like that wording..

Thanks again guys..
