This is crazy!....:cam:

I'm gettin' older and really tired of trying to sort out the different signals-rechecking them by lifting the coil, etc. So I got lazy for a few days and set the Ace on sensitivity #2- I air-tested and got coins at 3-4" and just wanted to have a couple of lazy days of just skimming the surface. Dang! I even found one hole I tried last week-I could tell I had recovered the hole, thinking it was only trash. This time-bong!-with 3 quarters in it! Next to the hole was a tab. Had I set the sens. too high last week? All signals were smooth-even the nickels had the same long tone. One nickel even kept the tone 4"! Sorry, I found so much I didn't have room to zoom in. There are $10 even in quarters! I even found 2 tiny charms in the jewelry mode. Some kid lost his key. The zipper foot is probably too far away to see-but I'm going to put a slip-ring in each end and a treble hook on one end and see how it works as a fishing bait! I can't tell you how much I enjoyed almost every signal being easy to discern. I did have one deep "bong" even at this low sensitivity and lifting the coil a foot let me know it was another one of those East Texas size metal plates that seem to be at every school. Thanks for looking.

If you want "more crazy" Go back to that spot in all metal mode. Then listen for any beep but iron. Then dig. Now see what you missed?

I'll try that on my next outing. Thanks-I'm not so old I can't learn:heh:

Yeah I have preached low sensitivity forever. It will mask a lot of targets. Seems like it paid off well for you. Nice pile of goodies.

I'm always afraid of setting the machine too low, past weekend I had mine at 6 and bumped it to 7 on occasion. I may have to try the lower setting, may get rid of the tiny specks of foil/brass i've been finding. Also I've noticed I can't "wish" a good target, if it sounds off good 4 way it is. All the 2 way/broken signals were crap, just like the machine was trying to tell me it was crap, I need to listen more, lol. I think from now on I'll just dig "good" signals and leave the iffy ones to the master treasure hunters!

Had a pound of sand in my coil cover:rant:, it the process of removing it I demolished it, lol. I never use em anyway, figure If I wear a coil out I can buy a new one!

Yeah! Right on! Couldn't believe I was STILL getting coins at 3-4". Now these locations are oft-hunted ones that are on my rotating parks and schools list. I know the ins and outs of each location and can just about tell you where each one of these "big" targets are-some I have even used a t-handle probe meant for bottle hunting to "feel" them out. All I can guess is they're large pieces of scrap metal burned off by welding when building the schools. Well, I got tired of running at 4 sens. and having to slow down and recheck the ones I couldn't remember and I usually have about 3 football fields length of search area at some of the schools. And since I'm moving the coil at a slightly brisk pace the depth actually is better than just pokin' along. As a matter of fact, a few of these STILL cause me to raise the coil nearly a foot! Also, the Ace has a tendency to "overreact" at higher settings when the coil is moving at this pace and this is nearly non-existent at #2 sens. I am not implying this is the best for all areas, but for places like these, where the stuff is replaced every week, it's marvellous. And it really makes sense- how deep can a coin move in a week or two? Now I have one place that is just disastrous that I have lowered the Ace all the way and cherry picked the surface trash (loaded!) and found coins, etc., but that is really too low.

Are you "twitching" all the bad signals? Bad thing about coil covers ( never use them ) is that they collect moisture and debris and cause falseing.

I keep telling folks they don't have to crank the sensitivity to the max to find targets. It ain't a depth control as many believe.

Just one more post on this and I'll shup up. After reading the many posts, and just naturally being a "tinkerer", I made three tests with the Ace. I run in Relics mode at the tot lots because Garrett,IMHO, set the disc "just right" to get rid of nails, hairpins, etc. and I'm able to have a chance at the tiniest gold. Whenever I got a small, quick signal that registered in the iron/foil range, I lowered the sens from 4 to 3, trying to keep the coil at the same height, and then rescanned. The signal was clearer! I did the same in the coins mode on the bongety-bong-beep signals and the same thing happened. Finally, when I found a deeper target I did the same thing. My reasoning was that the ground signal didn't return as strong and therefore the target signal received more amplification. On deep targets, I could tell that if I had been moving the coil slower, I may have missed the target. So, as Bill says, 4 is probably the all around best for general hunting-and if you have special needs, move it up or down to your liking-or ground, trash conditions. OK, Bill-time to say "I told you"!
