Thought it was gonna be just another clad day

I had a couple of hours to hunt before I picked up my wife and boys at the airport so I headed over to an old private school academy in my home town. I had been hunting for about an hour and a half and had found the usual clad and a couple of wheats. I had just dug a couple of Lincoln memorials when I moved on about 10 yards to some old looking ground. I picked up a solid 12-40 signal on my Etrac, dug down about 4", located the target with my Sunray and out popped this:

First let me state it is SILVER. The incandescent light combined with the red background gave the coin a golden hue. It is a 1/2 Real minted in Mexico City in 1828 after the Mexican Republic gained independence in 1821. This is the second 1/2 Real I have found this year. :) I have yet to find a U.S. silver coin in 2010.

I also found this old key.

Nice find dgc, I think I would lose all bodily functions if i found something that old. How big a city you live in? My town is only about 20,000 and I really have to do major research to find any good places because the common areas aren't much good. Craig

Dang, that is an AWESOME find!

Real nice 1/2 Real , Dgc!!

Small town Craig but Mississippi was first settled (under Spanish Land Grants) near my home town. Lots of opportunities here IF you can get permission from property owners.

HH, Crispy Critter

The coin is slightly smaller in diameter than a U.S. dime and is also thinner which explains the 12-40 signal on the Etrac.

Great find and I would love to have one But is it a Reale ? With the independance from Spain did the monetary system stay the same?or is it a peco or centovo? I will have to look that up you have me wondering.Great find either way

Very cool find! Just think of the history in that coin. That old key is also neat and almost looks like a railroad lock key. Any initials or markings on the top (rounded) part? HH

They are Reales for this coin and about 10 more years after your coin.Nice Coin

Since 1823, Mexican coins have had the national emblem on the front, accompanied by the inscription

Yes Token Digger put me on to the same thing. Look and size are just like railroad lock keys I found on the internet, but mine is plain (no markings).

Thanks for the reply.
