thunking sounds

Made a short video with the thunk sound the Etrac makes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRmgWLqWLSU&feature=youtu.be

Thanks, I think I was imagining a different sound! I haven't run in to that one yet on a deep target, in my area the good targets are usually no more then 8 to 10 and I still get a good tone and ID. Usually but not always

I have experienced that sound on deeper targets in ares where I have to run Sensitivity lower than 22 (due to EMI and/or bad ground conditions). I can see where it is frustrating and may lead to missing targets. Do you only experience it in air testing or has this occurred in the field? If in the field, do you dig a signal like that? The TID seems to indicate good target. Have you tried using QuickMask when you get a thunk to see if it still thunks or makes a smooth sound?

Just recently discovered this sound. In the past I've passed these buried targets. Actually never looked at the VDI, but only listening. I had been listening for the very low volume high tones and possibly walking right over a deep silver. To answer your question, I have heard this thunking sound, but not dug any yet.

That's the sound I've been wondering about ! I have heard it in the old park I hunt many times. Usually I get another sound in front of it or a null . There is so much iron in this park I assumed it was part of an iron signal. I have hunted older over hunted parks around town this year to get a good feel for the E trac before venturing out to some other more promising areas . I just like to have some idea what I'm digging before digging another 8-12 in deep hole in hard ground . Thank you for your help I really appreciate it!

Yup good video, but not the thunk I get. I would dig those tones.

It isupposeded to get in the upper 50's this weekend and if it does I'll get a video of the thunk I get. You'll also see 100% of them are iron. I think the thunk is simply the sound we get when a target slips in and out of the discrimination settings. Iron falsing opossiblyly a deep coin, but a deep coin would have both a high tone and the thunk, like the video, whereas iron simply thunks as it passes in and out of the discrimination pattern.

I've had the high tone with a thunk at the end also. Is that an indication of any deep coin or just silver? Seems like an earlier post indicated it was deep silver. Looks like I need to go back over an area where I was hunting the other day and try to find those high tones with a thunk I passed up.

MarkG -- what type of coin were you using? By the CO numbers I'd say it was a dime or quarter, but could have been a Memorial cent also from CO numbers I've seen in the field.

I'v found them on different types of coins deep wheaties, indians, and silver that is why I mentioned the tunk and do dig them as it's fringe detection depth of the settings your using like sensitivity and discrimination like was mentioned.
When I go to open quick mask you can get a better ID and sometimes sound signal to help identify objects that are iffy and hitting in and out like was just mentioned. The good cond. no. is in the discrimination pattern the bad lower fer. no. is out draging the signal down on us hitting in the blacked out area. Lately I've been putting the machine in manual when I come across these and running a higher sensitivity than what I'm at in Auto+3 which is what I mostly run in all the time. Going to manual helps on the signal too.

If you have a repeatable high tone,,, especially in both directions and two different angles, I wouldn't care what sounds where before OR after it,,,,, I'd dig that fur sure !!!!

Good information here!!!!

Barber quarter.
Hope to re-visit some old places this weekend and for sure, I'll be listening for those sounds.

And you find out what they are by digging a couple and noting what a particular sound and situation, depth, site age, nature yield.

Had an opportunity to go back over a yard I detected on earlier in the week where I had some "thunks". I managed to find one of the thunks again; it gave a reading of 12-44 at 8" depth so I'm thinking silver dime -- no such luck. It was a 1944D wheat at about 8". The detector gave kind of weird high tone (not clear and crisp) followed by a thunk.

If you can find another one of those thunk targets, before digging switch your tone to hold pitch and see what happens.
Keep me posted.
I really love this machine.

Nice work Mark. I think I read it in Andy's book, but it talked about using hold pitch for deep targets. Also, using "long" as you probably know but pitch hold in cleaner ground will go deeper as you stated. That is really interesting and the site I'm going to go back through on Monday, if weather allows, will be pitch hold territory. Chance for very deep targets here so I'll be sure to bring the video cam and test!

this I don't understand,,,, a tone variation making the ET go deeper makes my brain hurt. I read where tone hold HELPS you get deeper coins by alerting your ears to a deeper target that the machine was not able to give a full signal on, but that is not making the MD go deeper,,,

Same here. I have only a few hours on the Etrac and have heard that sound many times. I assumed that it was iron because it happens so frequently. I primarily hunt old farm sites that are full of iron trash, and on one particular farm site i have gotten that "thunk" A LOT. If that noise indicates silver, i could retire today..lol.
On the next trip to that site, i will dig the "thunks" to see what is there.

Well, maybe it's more than just what it appears to be (tone variation). Mark tested and verified this. The "thunking" happens at the edge of possible target depth and was gone when on pitch hold. We are just pushing a button but we don't know all that that entails.

I'm REALLY curious too.

Update:

Changing to pitch hold changes everything I posted this week.
The thunking has completely vanished regardless of distance from the coil or in the ground. Actually I believe I've gained from 1/2 to 1 inch more depth with pitch hold.
Please bear in mind, all other settings remaining the same, change from either normal, smooth or long to pitch hold and the thunk sound now is a consistent high tone (if you are in 4 tone) regardless of depth or distance from the coil.

You said it, if it doesn't repeat I usually don't dig.
