Went out to the ghetto park after work for a few minutes in the blustery cold weather. I found a silver roosevelt in a bunch of pulltabs, so I was a little motivated to continue freezing my butt off for another few minutes. Not long after I get a faint repeatable hit that sounded like a vey deep coin.... the crosshairs bounced up and down the right side of the screen. I dug down about 4-5 inches and the probe locked onto a hit. More digging and I lose the signal. Pretty soon I see a tiny round object in the dirt pile - it looked like a little copper rivet washer... the kind we always find, because they make such a nice signal. Only this one was grey colored and it started to shine when I wiped it off. Then I see a fraction of "1/4" on one side. Could it be a tiny piece of play money? It sure looked like it was silver and not aluminum.... The other side had the bust of a person... then my memory started to work. I remember seeing this coin before... I think it is Mexican. Sure enough when I got it home, cleaned it up some more and checked the coin catalogs, I found it! 1848 Mexican 1/4 real. Man, what a tiny coin! smaller than a 3 cent piece. It is pictured here front and back, next to a Merc dime for comparison. These Explorers EXCEL at finding tiny silver items. Thanks for checking it out. HH, Mike
