Just about the only real feature that the Ace doesn't have, is a volume control. A couple of weeks ago, I was contacted by another Findmall forum member with a really neat idea to overcome this short fall. He often reads this forum, but posts on one of the other forums. He doesn't wish to be identified any more than a first name. So All I can say, is, John, thanks heaps for an absolutely brilliant idea that is so cheap and easy, yet so effective! (Don't be shy. Come on board. The guys here are great.)
What this idea is; in order to reduce the volume of the Ace, just cover the speaker holes with some tape! I used 2 layers of insulation tape, and it reduced the volume by around 80%! Wow! When I used the Ace today (first hunt that I've tried it on) I actually had to peel back (volume control
) the tape from just one of the slits. This increased the volume to a just right level for me!
The other thing that I did differently today, was to hunt with the GTI's battery pack detached from the detector. I hadn't realised how much of a negative impact that it's weight has been having on me. Due to a dodgy neck, I find that after swinging it for 3 hours, I end up with head aches that can last for a couple of days. I've noticed that even on short hunts, the weight has been causing niggling problems, which has caused a reduction in patience with it. As the extension cable is too short to properly mount on your waist, instead I loaded it into an over the shoulder camera bag that held the battery pack loosely around my waist area , yet able to stay closer to the detector than would be otherwise possible, if were mounted to my waist. The difference was quite significant. It became a much more pleasant machine to use. After using it for a couple of hours this afternoon, I found that the cable didn't want to retract back into it's housing, so I may look at getting a 1.1 metre piece of straight cable made up, so as to eliminate this short fall.
I've been playing around with the GTI at home with some interesting results. Our 50cent coins are large 12 sided coins. I remember the local experience GTI user saying that he doesn't find many of these coins. I find my share of them, they normally come up as a 5.5 or 6, but after playing around with them on the GTI, with the coil detached from the detector and having it lying bottom facing up; had a 50c coin showing up anywhere from 2 to 8!. This occurs when turning the coin around at different angles, to simulate the different positions that it may be in the ground. Although most coins will bounce around over a few notches when you do this, I found this most unusual. All I can think of, is that do to the fact that it isn't a standard circular coin that we normally hunt, perhaps that due to the fact that it has corners, it must be causing the signal to break up a bit as if it hit a junk target.
I've been using all 4 of my detectors over the last few weeks with my most unusual find being an Indonesian 200 Rupiah with the GTI. I actually eye balled it. When I picked it up, it felt like plastic, but registers as a 9 on the GTI. Totals for the last 3 weeks stand at $197.65 which included a personal best single hunt of $87.98 in 3.5 hours with a non Garrett machine. I'll post a pic tomorrow so that I can photo it in full daylight and hopefully crack the $200 mark as well.
