Took the Ace and the 1500 out today and tried a couple of things.

Just about the only real feature that the Ace doesn't have, is a volume control. A couple of weeks ago, I was contacted by another Findmall forum member with a really neat idea to overcome this short fall. He often reads this forum, but posts on one of the other forums. He doesn't wish to be identified any more than a first name. So All I can say, is, John, thanks heaps for an absolutely brilliant idea that is so cheap and easy, yet so effective! (Don't be shy. Come on board. The guys here are great.)
What this idea is; in order to reduce the volume of the Ace, just cover the speaker holes with some tape! I used 2 layers of insulation tape, and it reduced the volume by around 80%! Wow! When I used the Ace today (first hunt that I've tried it on) I actually had to peel back (volume control:lol:) the tape from just one of the slits. This increased the volume to a just right level for me!
The other thing that I did differently today, was to hunt with the GTI's battery pack detached from the detector. I hadn't realised how much of a negative impact that it's weight has been having on me. Due to a dodgy neck, I find that after swinging it for 3 hours, I end up with head aches that can last for a couple of days. I've noticed that even on short hunts, the weight has been causing niggling problems, which has caused a reduction in patience with it. As the extension cable is too short to properly mount on your waist, instead I loaded it into an over the shoulder camera bag that held the battery pack loosely around my waist area , yet able to stay closer to the detector than would be otherwise possible, if were mounted to my waist. The difference was quite significant. It became a much more pleasant machine to use. After using it for a couple of hours this afternoon, I found that the cable didn't want to retract back into it's housing, so I may look at getting a 1.1 metre piece of straight cable made up, so as to eliminate this short fall.
I've been playing around with the GTI at home with some interesting results. Our 50cent coins are large 12 sided coins. I remember the local experience GTI user saying that he doesn't find many of these coins. I find my share of them, they normally come up as a 5.5 or 6, but after playing around with them on the GTI, with the coil detached from the detector and having it lying bottom facing up; had a 50c coin showing up anywhere from 2 to 8!. This occurs when turning the coin around at different angles, to simulate the different positions that it may be in the ground. Although most coins will bounce around over a few notches when you do this, I found this most unusual. All I can think of, is that do to the fact that it isn't a standard circular coin that we normally hunt, perhaps that due to the fact that it has corners, it must be causing the signal to break up a bit as if it hit a junk target.
I've been using all 4 of my detectors over the last few weeks with my most unusual find being an Indonesian 200 Rupiah with the GTI. I actually eye balled it. When I picked it up, it felt like plastic, but registers as a 9 on the GTI. Totals for the last 3 weeks stand at $197.65 which included a personal best single hunt of $87.98 in 3.5 hours with a non Garrett machine. I'll post a pic tomorrow so that I can photo it in full daylight and hopefully crack the $200 mark as well.
Mick Evans.

hi Mick sounds like your having fun playing with your detectors. wow $87.98 that's a Lotta $$$ and in 3.5 hours you must have been steaming after that i have to ask was it found in tot lots, grass, beach. hope you crack the $200 mark. i"d love to know how many Aussies are on the forum.
happy hunting

It was found in the bark chip area of my sons' former school. I just came back from detecting at the end of the street. Found $3.35, which takes me over the $200 mark.Ran out of daylight to take photos though. Took the GTI out today. Should have taken the Ace. It's a much better machine.

I don't mean to cut in on your post, but I have to wonder after reading this statement & I quote (Took the GTI out today. Should have taken the Ace. It's a much better machine)

I have to ask are the Garrett GTI's that bad, I mean c'mon I have been detecting 20 years and just got my second Ace 250 because I figured I was wrong about not liking it the first time I got one. I wasn't, I sold the Ace as fast as I could and don't miss it for a minute, yes they are ok for $200.00 but very very over rated. Thanks! Steve.

hi SkiWhiz i think he"s talking about in the tot lots the ace 250 is the best detector i have used in the lots and i"v used a few + it"s good in the grass for shallow and deep coins as well. before i joined this forum i dug close to 100 old silver coins with it. the only place i dont use it is at the beach as it does not handle the salt to well. but all said and done it"s all about personal choice.

Hello Mick Evans

you found $87.89 in 3.5 hours in Austrailia correct? Those two dollar austrailian coins must add up fast I bet.

Pretty hard to do here in the states. Our biggest coins are the 25 cents. takes us months to get $87 in clad.

If you are in the states my apologies

You have a great career as a tester for MD'er. I like the way you analyse things.

Always show us your loot pic's, but it would be nice if you showed some scenery pic's also.

G'day Steve.
I guess we all have different wants in a machine, and yes, I think that the Ace is a much better machine than the GTI's. Lighter, faster recovery speed. With a GTI, if you go over a target that is a notch away from the previous target, then it takes around 7 seconds to reset! If you go over it before hand, then you will get an incorrect reading. As the targets I go after, are in screw cap range, then this becomes significant. The Ace's tones are more useful than the GTI's, The Ace can size a target better than a GTI, it can get in closer to metal, and is less susceptible to ground mineralisation than the GTI's, despite having a fix ground balance. I've hunted spots with the Ace, that the GTI just locked up on 4.5. (same spot)
I hear you on the Ace. It took me a bit of time to adjust to it as it's audio is different to anything else I've used before. It sounds like a blunt instrument at first, but you learn to listen to how wide and whether the signal is chopped or full. The pinpoint is a feature that can really sing to you. There is so much that you can learn about a target with it, not to mention how accurate it is. If you try and use the pinpoint as per the manual, then you'll get real frustrated with it fairly quickly. It works, but not a very good method. That's where having forums like this are a fantastic help. I've come across a few experienced detectorists that didn't get the Ace and I can understand how that can happen. I'm not saying that you should run out and buy an Ace. If you didn't like it, then it would be a bad Idea. You're thoughts would be how I reflect on the GTI's.I've been trying hard to like it, but I seem to be failing. Unfortunately if I sold it, then I'd have to effectively give it away. (cost $1300 with a DD coil.) Lot's of folks here absolutely love them and all can say to that, is keep using them. If you have confidence in a machine, then that is important.
I'm not saying that the Ace is the best detector ever made, but it is an efficient one for the type of hunting that I do. And yup, I'm a fan of it. That said, I also like using other detectors as well, but for me, the Ace is the one I use most.
Mick Evans.

Yes, I live in Australia and those $1 and $2 coins add up Real fast! They are my favourite targets. If you had them commonly in the States, then you'd probably think that Christmas was 365 days of the year.
I thought that I would post a picture for you and John. These are from my the hunts that I mentioned. I also included a Zinc penny that I found here in Dubbo last year with the Ace. They sound like a $2 coin with most detectors. This will give you some idea of coin sizes. The large copper coin on the left of the picture is a 1951 penny. One of our pre-decimal coins. We changed our currency from "pounds " to "dollars" in 1966. $1 coins came out in 1984 and the $2 coin came out in 1988, replacing notes. The coin on the bottom left, is a non standard 20c. The coin with the bird on it, was found when I had the GTI , but I eye balled it. It is a 200 Rupiah from Indonesia. I also included a $1 and $2coin just above and to the right of the zinc penny.
John. If I remember, I'll take a photo of one of my favourite spots in the next few weeks, when I detect there again. I'm off to Canberra on the week end with the family. It would be nice to do some detecting down there, but I may be too busy to do so.The roof of Parliament house is actually a lawn! I kid you not. It is also a public area too. It would be a bit cheeky if I could get the opportunity to detect there.:ausflag: We'll see.
