Found this today at an old demolished Homesite, says u.s. on it and that's it.....not sure what this is, any clues?

Give us a picture of the back. It looks like a keyhole cover for a U.S. padlock.

Very nice to know, this is my first keyhole cover/piece of padlock. The big u.s. made me think military but knowing what it is now I see it.

Having worked as a locksmith, the secondary pictures show it to very well possibly be a keyhole cover. Especially the "tit" sticking out that provided the pivot point for it.
