Upgrade from explorer 2 to e-trac?

New member
I ordered my Explorer 2 new when they first came out. The good old machine has paid for itself over and again, and I still use it, its the only detector that I own. Along with six coils, (the stock FBS 1050, that I do not us and I would sell to the best offer along with the Koss headphones that I dont use) and four headphones. My question is, should I upgrade to the E-trac and why, or wait for a new upgrade from Minalab(does anyone have an insite on a new Minelab detector beyond the E-trac?). Thanks to all of you on the forum for your questions and opinnions (good for the ones new to metal detecting, and us old timers too).

Hi sheepsfoot-----I just seen your post.----The last I heard (about 2 weeks ago) Minelab isn't doing any R&D, etc. on any new top of the line detector.-----They are involved in govt. contracts on their other products right now.---You can take this for what it is worth to you but without mentioning any names---it did come from someone "in the know".------Hope this helps in your decision making process but don't go by just what I've said---get some other opinions also.-------As far as an upgrade from an EX II to an Etrac--they are both great machines--I have owned/used them both.-----If you are happy with your EX II and know it well, you may want to consider just staying with it.---As I said, both are excellent detectors.------Having said that, one thing you might want to consider is the fact that the EX II is approaching & at some point will reach the 10 yr. limit for repair (on detectors) that Minelab has instituted.----Even at that (as I understand it) if they have parts for the EX II after the 10 yr.time line, you are still "good to go" with it.-------In the end, the decision is yours---you just have to go with what you (and your pocket book) feels most comfortable with.-----Hope this is of some help to you.--------Regards, Del

Thank you for your post Del, and thank you for stepping up first. Im going to stay with my Explorer 2, and continue to find great finds.

You're welcome sheepsfoot.-----I loved that EX II--made some GREAT finds with it.-----You sure can't go wrong with just sticking with it.----IMHO, all the Explorers and the Etrac are really great machines, and I've owned/used 'em all.-----------Del

I would think about upgrading to the "PRO" style coil as I think it is a bit better than the stock 10" that came on your Explorer II.

The newer Explorer SE and the E-trac do have faster processors and can recover from a null quicker, but I really dont know if you would gain that much depth over what you have now.
Of course the E-Trac has the improved plotting of CO and FE numbers but unless you are really into analyzing your targets to that degree it will not mean much to you.

My suggestion if you have money try one, life is short and if you will not like ETrac you can always sale it. about explorers know allot they are all the same -with few little exception. about pro coil have opinion that its the same 1050 coil but made different design:lighter and connection in center, but I like more 1050, but again 1050 coils like pro can be very little different, the same one will work better then other. but dont tell its a secret

That's interesting!-----All of the (several) Pro coils I've tested checked out the same (all else being identical).----Don't know about the 1050's--never tested them against each other.--------Del

I have used an explorer xs for the last 2 years, got an e-trac about a month ago. I wasn't loving it the 1st 5 times out, but the 6th time I went to a spot in a park I hit hard last year. I found 2 silver canadian 5 cent, which are pretty tiny, 1 silver dime and 2 large cents. I had definitely covered the area with the explorer xs several times. In my opinion the e-trac found these coins because it is much faster. it is different then the explorers, but I am definitely finding coins as deep that are masked. I now have much more faith in the e-trac and will be keeping it.
