Wader detector???

Hi all,
I'm leaving for Fl. next week for the winter. I have a MXT but thought I would like to try salt water beaches and maybe knee to waist deep water Summers I live on Lake Michigan. Too to go deeper. I have chances to buy Fisher 1280X at a good price. Is this a good detector or should I look something else. Need advise

I would not go into the water at all with the MXT or any other non waterproof detector. When you're in the ocean surf and you wade in to knee or waist deep the swells and breakers can change the depth to neck deep or over your head in an instant. The ocean is a different environment from any other and due to the wave action on even an average day there really is no way to maintain your depth at a constant like knee or waist deep. As far as the 1280X goes, I had one a number of years ago and I didn't like it in the salt sand or surf. I never could get the unit very stable but it's probably just the sand in my area as I've read posts by some who say theirs works great. I think the Minelabs are great with the Excalibur being the beach detector of choice for many, many people but there are other good machines too. One thing I do like about the Minelabs is that they are super smooth even on my beaches. They are auto ground balance detectors so you never have to worry with that. Just do a search on Excal and you'll find enough reading material to keep you busy for a long time. My next detector is going to be one. Best of luck. --Jerry

I would look at the Minelab Excalibur or the whites Beachunter300... would be my first choices..

If the area you will be hunting is heavily hunted a PI unit will be more productive, but takes some getting used to and you will need a good digger!!

Prepare yourself for a serious workout!!

Areas with heavy mineral content in the sand and/or local electrical interference may have to be factored into your choice of machines too!

If there is a lot of trash the Excal is hard to beat and is rarely affected by electrical interference!

Slow and steady, swinging the coil in long, slow arcs while carefully following the contours of the bottom is the way to maximize your finds!!

you may want to check out Detector Pro line of machines-they are very good,plenty deep, light weight ,priced right and made in USA.I use the wader with great success also they have a PI machine if your looking for that type-which is good for salt water/beach hunting.call MRBILL for a deal and more info.more money saved on detector =more money to keep other half happy,or to put in gas tank

Also be aware that the Detector Pro PI is real hard to Pinpoint your target, I never did master it. I dug some big holes looking for the target, so I sold it. The whites PI is a good choice, Or Beachhunter ID will woork great. Gene

I had my DP PI 4yrs. now, Took me a yr. to figure out 80% of the pinpointing....still 80% today! lol But hey, I got a big scoop 6x8x13.....I Don't dig big holes anymore...80% + Big scoop = TARGETS!!

Excalibur for me. I owned a whites beach hunter and a fisher cz. The Excal is by far the best in water and on wet sand.
