does anyone have any suggestions on any they love - need to get a pair now that shorts won't cut it anymore..
 
Go with the chest high, lite as possible....with the build in boots...I use the Hodgeman wadelites {w/belt} last year 34 degrees water..no problem..get yourself a manual inflate PDF also.....for insurance

Cabela's has an excellent selection Barry, BUT BE SURE to get a pair WITHOUT the steel shank in them. I use a set that I originally used for duck hunting and gotta keep the coil outa range, savvy? I use the chest high neoprenes, but with the boots made onto them.
 
I bought my "Field and Stream" waders at Dick's Sporting Goods on sale for under a hundred dollars as I recall.

They are 3 mil neoprene and reach up under my armpits and have a high bib front and a high back for more splash protection.

So far they have been a good buy.

Sometimes, even with the best name brands, you will end up with a leaker right out of the box!

I get them with over sized boots so I can wear heavy socks and get them on and off more easily.

I fold down my sock tops and wrap my pants legs snug around my ankles and then pull my sock tops up and over my pants to make sliding my legs into the waders more easy.

For winter use when weather gets cold 5 mil neoprene (even heavier, maybe 7 mil is available as I recall) is a better way to go and if you can get them a size or two larger you can wear thermal clothing underneath.

Layering thermal underwear and a pair over insulated coveralls with over-sized 5 mil waders allowed me to hunt one February when there were small icebergs floating in Long Island Sound.

Shoulder high Rubber gauntlets with wool glove liners finished of the outfit and allowed me to hunt in reasonable comfort.

This is a good thread! Do any of you know where you can find a wader without the steel shank? Cabela's makes a really good product, but I called and all of their neoprenes have the steel shank. Thanks for the tip GH, I never thought about it!

Out of topic, but have anybody told you that u look like Chuck Lidell? At least with ur gear on. :detecting:
 
I wear my farmer john wetsuit top over my neopreme waders, basically is a dry suit. If I step into water deeper than waders and stay there until wetsuit floods, I will get a little wet. But if I step into water thats deeper than waders and step right back out I stay nice and dry. In this combo you don't have to worry about sinking, you have to worry about floating away!
When its really cold I put my farmer john bottoms & booties then the waders then the farmer john top, have been detecting in January in a snow storm stayed toasty warm but felt like the tin man, oil me!

Hey TinMan, it amazes me how we go to extremes to stay warm and Toto with a little fur needs nothing! Those are some great tips for staying warm! People need to take care though if they get upended, if the waders fit to lose there could be enough air in them that you cannot right yourself and end up losing your life. In other words the air moves to the boot/shoe area when you are upended and hangs you upside down in the water. Wearing an inflatable flotation device will cure that problem.

Mine have the steel shank all I did was to extend the shaft on my excal, watch my first three video's and my very last video. Hunting all metal they get picked up very little , my hunting parter used a PI and never complained about his either. With the added support of the steel shank this helps in the ruff waters of the Alantic. Just don't get the RedHead

I have been swimming in my waders and found they didn't float any more or less than swimming in my farmer john bottoms. They did float for sure but it wasn't trapped air it was the neopreme itself floating. I have intentionally flooded my neopreme waders and there really is no effect other than you are now wet! And you don't float quite as high in the water. It doesn't float you upside down, it just floats. As soon as you put your feet down (very easy to do) the air comes out the top. With the farmer john top on I don't think you could flood the waders even if you wanted to, you can get water in there but not flood them. Now as you exit the water with flooded neopreme waders you may struggle a little until you undo your suspenders and peel them down to let some water out (michelin man syndrome). But that is as bad as it gets. If you look at some of the high end floatation vest you'll find they are made of neopreme.

Now that's nice..Who makes those Bruce? And, is that you? I see your Nuttall scoop, has to be you....it looks like front entry, Kokatat Gore-tex? Good looking gloves also..does this drysuit have the neoprene sox's? My feet so cold after a few hours, even with the heaters cooking in the 30 degree water. What's the secret on that? Thanks for sharing..like that clean looking water....Joe
 
I also wear SeaSoft Stealth boots in winter.
Don't forget I have clothes on. And no water touches me anywhere!:thumbup:

Hi Bruce,

Good looking suit and seems well made.

How long can one last?

My neoprene waders have all had a limited life span and for the purchase price I would hope to get lots of use out of one.
