Want just look for the deep coins using deus, try this

No more digging -25 C for daily high today . I have to move to warmer climate to be able to do some more digging
Good luck to you guys and gals in your warmer places

I dug a nickel at 9.5" the other day in my front yard that was completely on edge, the signal was faint and choppy but the vdi read 82-84 so I dug it thinking it was possibly a silver dime...I have to say I was impressed and have had my E-trac over the exact same spot numerous times and never heard it.

I agree 100% Squirrel and hunt in a similar way for deep smalls! I use Audio Response at 2 with my WS5s and while sweeping, the soft quiet purr catches me, I verify it's deep/small with the horseshoe (as you said the very slightest top right), then I verify it's IDing at say 30 or higher and then i'm digging every time.

Cheers,
Bobby TN

FWIW, I would describe the sound made by my Deus as more of "hen turkey" soft, happy clucking/purring. I am sure if you are a turkey hunter, you have heard this sound. If not, you can always go to a local sporting goods store and do a soft rub with the stylus softly across the slate of a turkey call.

Thanks squirrel1. I've used pretty much this same method with some great results. I LOVE the deep good tones on the horseshoe and the fact that the Deus offers so many tools to sniff them out. No VDI can actually be a blessing. My biggest disappointment is when that deep tone turns up a zinc which suggests a pourover area. I do have one question. I've personally not found VDIs to be particularly inaccurate but rather just non existent beyond about 8" so unless i'm relic hunting I usually notch the area past nickels up to the area where pennies begin to ring. Have you or anyone else ever found say a deeper silver coin that gave a good tone but whose VDI rang up way outside of its typical range? thanks!

I have read were some think the Deus is a beep and dig machine. The deus is NOT a beep and dig machine. I'll explain. And also show how you the user can maybe screen your targets to weed out the shallower junk. I went to a church yard today. I'd been there before many times. Had a white's V3i there, and an etrac. Today was the 1st time with Deus. And this site I might add has been hunted hard by other people using various machines. I generally run reactivity 1 silencer -1. You'll see some people complain about the TID on deus as being inferior to say etrac/CTX on deeper coins. This is in fact true. But the deus does something no other VLF detector does that's very useful. It quits IDing targets at around 8" give or take. There are slight differences between 9 and 11" coils, plus target size and ground mineralization also has effects. So you want to look for coins on a church yard i.e. Running in 8 khz and 12 khz most coins won't start coming in till around 78 VDI approximately. This is the number I use. So while you're sweeping with all numbers 78 and above set to highest tone, you'll want to listen. When you hear a high tone go ahead and look at your screen. If you see fairly steady numbers of 78 or above staying in the window with repeated sweeps, go ahead and dig. Now for the deep targets. While your sweeping you also need to listen for the gradual rise and fall of a higher pitch. As you pass your coil back over the spot you'll want to hear the nice clear gradual rise and fall of the "cat purring sound". Watch your meter, you'll probably see a number from 94 thru 98. Also you'll most likely but not always see the slightest upper right portion of the horseshoe highlighted. Now you can pivot around the target if you wish while sweeping, but if the tone disappears or starts breaking up, don't walk off. Unless the target is real small you probably have a target under your coil that's 8"plus deep. So dig where the cat purring sounds were the highest tone sounding. Start digging. A word of caution. After you say dig around 6 inches deep and haven't located your target. You can always stand up and sweep the hole with your detector. You may or MAY NOT hear it. KEEP digging and check with your pinpointer frequently. If you heard the slight rise and fall of a tone that sounds very much like a cat purring, in all likelihood there's a target in the hole. Don't give up digging until you find it. It can be iron. This does happen from time to time. But if you find say a nail in the hole and you haven't gotten down to at least 9-10 inches keep digging. A pinpointer is real handy to have and will save you a bunch of time and can help you prevent damage to a coin, etc. On deep coins the Deus probably/likely WILL NOT beep. So today this tactic seemed to work pretty good. Seems small pieces of tinfoil when balled up would give some pretty good coin numbers at times and beep (meaning <8" deep. I did dig 3 deep targets. A wheat at a measured 9.25 inches, a low brass 12 gauge hull at 10", and another wheat at 8.5 inches. For all new deus users. A recommendation. Dig a hole down about 12 inches, big enough to get your hand and arm into. Take a ruler with you and reach down in the hole and try and stick the dime in the side of the hole at various depths. Play with your settings on your deus. 8 or 12 khz, reactivity 1 silencer 0 or -1 are good settings for deep coins. Try and get the fainter cat purring sound as you move your coil across the dime. Deep coins don't sound as obvious using a deus vs etrac/CTX, but once you learn what they sound like using a deus, you can then use this unusual VLF detector characteristic to your benefit when looking for deep coins etc.
Now I mention the VDI number 78. Using the above will get the deep nickels too as long as you don't have them notched out. The deus does in a way have a depth meter.

Thanks. I found this very helpful.
I've found some deep dimes exactly as you described but sometimes find the mellow sound hard to pick out in sites with a lot of "sound".

And when doing this what Program are you using or is it a custom program

Somebody described it as the sound you get rubbing a finger on a balloon. Pretty close to that.

I run in Full Tones 95% of the time.

The deeper faint, but stable coin signals have what I started calling a "buzzing sound" to them when you swing the coil back and forth over the target - I love that sound !

Squirrel ur so right, A few months ago got one of your teany tiney signals. At 9" dug a 14kt baby ring. Couldnt believe the depth for such a small object. I was wondering. Are you still using the LF coils?
I've personally noticed in my test garden, that the HF's really hit silver deep, maybe in part because they are quieter although I never run above 28 while hunting silver. I ask because of the hoopla over a new machine(which claims to make the hf coils less likely to hit the deep silver. I've not yet found any really deep silver with the HF's.in the field. thanks

I've done the same and I have dug up just balled up beaver tails and small pieces of foil its amazing I have to use my pointer to find some their so small!

If 8 and 12 khz work well, why wouldn't 4 khz work as well or better for deep silver since the often mentioned principle is lower frequencies do better on higher conductive targets?

Squirrel, great post and it really made me realize a couple things this weekend! First, your post really helped me as a new Deus user. I was hunting mostly by the beeps. Secondly, and more inportant, slowing down and listening for specific tones, recentered me to hunt as a concentrator. Coming from the CTX and wanting to believe in the tones and ID on that machine, I feel, made me a little lazy. I also have an Excalibur for the beach, which is a tone only machine, that requires concentration too.
I just wanted to thank you for the post and recentering me!

Still having problems with the 99s though and other basic understanding of the Deus.

I agree with all above, the Deus is a tone machine not a dig and beep machine like the AT Pro/Max is. You can use this to your advantage or it can bite you in the butt, I have found with the Deus the slower the better even at reactivity of 3 - 2.5. Like it's been said most deep targets will not have a VDI, love these type of targets.
Now Mr Squirrel if you have any thoughts on the new "Ground Sensitivity" settings I would be all ears.
