Water outside of battery compartment

don tyler

Active member
Removed Manticore control unit from shaft to bring on carry on bag. When i loosened the screws water came out, did not get in batterry comparment. Any way to prevent water from getting inside. Don merrimack NH

Any mods might void warranty or have adverse effects. Making a route for water to get out might be the answer.

If you seal off the area outside of the battery compartment where the handle meets the shaft, you may end up blocking the function of the pressure equalization vent - the small, white round Gortex vent near the battery compartment. This could lead to damaged seals and eventual water intrusion. Do as Stateguyt recommends and gently flush the compartment with fresh water after detecting in saltwater or just shake out any water if detecting in fresh water.

Can the grip be removed from the shaft without voiding the warranty?

Sure. That's the best way to really clean off the detector after a saltwater hunt. One word of caution is when you bolt the handle back onto the shaft do not over tighten the bolts. Just snug them up. If you over tighten the bolts you risk damaging the molded-in bosses that the bolts screw in to and the plastic the surrounds the bosses.
