Waterproof Goldquest Revisited. Tony and anyone else that

waterproofed their goldquest, I would like some more input or shall I say followup on putting the goldquest in the pelican box. Are you still using this? Was this a satifactory arrangement? And what headphones did you use? I don't want to get cheap headphones and wish later that I had spent the extra money for some good ones. Thanks, Foiled Again Jim

Jim,
So far, my GQSS in the Pelican 1060 case has worked better than all my expectations. To date, not a single drop has entered the case. I must have a 100 hours of use with it in the water so if there were going to be problems then I would have known about them by now. Having said that, I was meticulous in how I went about the (simple) process.
I had Mr Bill send me the Grayghost Underwater headphones which suit me perfectly.
If you go back through the postings, maybe under "Tony", I posted the process in detail. Not sure if the threads are still there or not
The engineering behind it is fairly straightforward as is the basic soldering, having said that, I ensured that I was 100% happy/confident with all stages of the modification as any leaks would void my warranty and rightly so !
Don't forget that Eric has the new Aquasearch V2, which allows interchangeable headphones and of course, access to the external controls.
Let me know if I can help any further,
Tony.

you mount it in the case? I tried to do a search under Tony, but didnt find any detailed instructions of any kind? You can post or just email me if you would? Thank You! 5282jt@msn.com

The main post on this were on Dec. 16, 17 and 18th and on Oct 15 of 2003. Hope this helps Chuck. How is your Super Bowl this year?

Hello Jim,
Go with a set of Grayghost Underwater headphones, You'll enjoy the audio from this headphone.
Like Tony and a few of the others, I waterproofed my GQ using a Whites Pi housing instead of a pelican box. Took some doing but the end result was great, Have full use of the controls. The housing atttaches under the arm rest.
Gary Storm or Mr Bill can supply you with a set of Grayghost underwater headphones, You can either hard-wire them in or go with the waterproof connectors used for this head-set.
Tony did an excellent job with his using a pelican box, I went a different route because of our rough California surf needing a more tough housing so I went with the Whites pi housing.

Jim (others),
The main points to keep in mind for this simple mod are:
1. Belt clip from GQ case needs removing.
2. ON/OFF/Threshold and REJECT knobs need replacing with slightly lower profile ones.
3. The bottom of the rubber liner needs to be cut out for the base of the GQ box to sit in.
4. The two drill holes MUST be accurate to suit the cable glands. I used 12mm holes (to suit the cable glands requirements).
5. Coil cable plug and headphone ends need to be removed back to a straight cable. The glands are then positioned over the cables. Make sure the coil cable is pulled through the drill hole before the black coil cable plug is soldered back on, otherwise it won't fit through the 12mm drill hole.
6. I got my cable glands from www.sealconusa.com
These are IP68 rated and cheap to buy (pack of 10 min).
7. The headphone lead is simple enough (although the headphone wires are quite fine). Excess headphone wires (from the detector) can be gently pushed back into the detector box.
8. Clean up the coil cable plug with desoldering wick so as to expose nice clean (solder free) pins. The main central cable wire goes to the middle cable plug pin, whilst the silver braid goes to the two other pins in equal portions. Note that one of the outer pins doesn't actually connect to anything internally.
9. Don't be tempted to overtighten the two cable gland lock nuts (on the inside of the case).
10. Make sure the two lock nuts are in place before you solder the respective wires/connectors.
11. Do a "dry" run of all parts. That way you can see where everything fits in before soldering.
12. A light coating of silicone grease on the rubber liner (this is basically your O-ring) where the lid top lid meets is a good idea.
13. Taking off the coil cable connector can be tricky at first. You need pressure inside of the collar whilst twisting on the outside.
I'll post more if I've forgotten any key points.
There are some photo's which might give you a better idea of the process...to follow.

This project seems doable by someone like me. I really appreciate the step by step instructions Tony. I have found that the GQ is too sensitive for working the upper beach as there is too much trash. However as I wade into the surf the number of trash targets is greatly reduced and this is where the GQ should shine. Thanks Again.

Mine's been working perfectly with no leakage! Getting the controls to the outside of the case really makes it a pleasure to use.
