Weekend Finds! Part:1. :detecting:

James N.D.

New member
Went Solo this weekend which is a first for quite a while now. Went back the the Fairgrounds that I found the last 15 Silver last weekend and found more. I tried a few different locations and almost everywhere I went, it seemed there were Coins to be had. As soon as I got out of my Van, I decided to do a Walk-Thru under the Grand Stands on my way out to the middle of the Track. No sooner than swinging my 5X10 Joey Coil just under the Grand Stands I got a Signal that read 27 on Digital and would sometimes go to 28 but only a few times. I opened up the Dirt and dug down about 4-5" and saw a Silver Edge. Alright, a Silver Dime I said! Pulled it out of the Hole and was soon looking at a 1923 Standing Liberty Quarter. Only the 3 is Legible on this one and too bad it wasn't the S Mint Mark. Still a nice looking Coin even though the Date is almost obliterated. I then started working around the Fence next to the Gate Entrance of the Track after my short hunt in the middle of the Track. The Coins must be Super Deep in the middle, since I couldn't pull anything old. I started finding Wheat Pennies right away. Then a Merc or Rosie here or there. Did a small area and decided to hit the Buildings Area again. Just as I thought! STILL LOADED!!! Started finding Wheats and then 2 Merc's in one hole. Then I went over next to the Entrance Gate itself that goes into the Fairgrounds and really started hammering the Silver. Most all finds were made with the Joey Coil. Only other places I stopped at was a Church which I found 1 Wheat Penny, but still has potential, a different Fairgrounds on Friday that netted me the Turtle Cuff Link, a few Wheats, and 2 Tokens. The 1 Token is Toast! Sunday hit another spot that yielded a lot of Silver back in the day and only found a few Wheats, and a Rosie. Saturday is when I found the rest of my finds and should have gone back but I wanted to save some Silver for next weekend. I would love for Rick(ND) to accompany me to the Fairgrounds either on Saturday or Sunday, whatever day you have off. You are guaranteed more than 1 Silver this time since I found some areas that has Silver left to be dug. Well, onto the finds. For the Weekend, I ended up with a total of 14 Silver. I would have had a good chance for 30 this last weekend but didn't go back on Sunday due to wanting to help Rick out with finding some Silver and the weather wasn't cooperating. I hope you can set something up Rick for next weekend!!! The Silver Finds were 1 Standing Liberty Quarter dated 1923, 1 Washington Quarter dated 1941-s, 1 Barber Dime dated 1900, 8 Mercury Dimes dated 1918,1918-d,1923,(2)1941-d,(3)1942-d, and 3 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1948-d,1948-s, and 1950-d. For Nickels, I found 3. They are 1 Buffalo Nickel dated 1930, 1 Jefferson Nickel dated 1941-d, and a not so Old Canadian Nickel dated 1962. Reason I added the Canadian Nickel is because they are made from Stainless Steel I think. The X-1 Probe only made a quick chirp on this one and almost missed this Coin since it Nulls out. For some reason it read high like a Wheat Penny, 27. The other Nickels also read high as well which I thought for sure were Wheat Pennies. Must have been the Iron in the ground. For Tokens, I found 3. 2 Good For 5c In Trade on the front and on the back it reads OXFORD OMAK. The flattened out Coin is what I believe to be another of these Tokens since it has the Lines on the inside Edge of the Coin. The other Token is a No Cash Value Token with a Clown on the front. That does it for Part:1. Look for Part:2 coming up within the hour. There is some neat finds in Part:2 so please enjoy Part:1 and do check out Part:2 later. Thanks for Looking and Good Luck and HH to you all. [attachment 69649 DirtySilver.jpg][attachment 69654 CleanedSilver.jpg][attachment 69655 DirtyNickels.jpg][attachment 69656 CleanedNickels.jpg][attachment 69657 DirtyTokens.jpg][attachment 69658 CleanedTokens.jpg]

Here is the rest of the finds from the Weekend. I found 51 and 1/2 Wheat Pennies. The 1/2 is a Wheat Penny cut in half. I found 1 other Wheat Penny that is badly damaged and the Date is no longer known. It does have an S Mint Mark, I just hope it wasn't a 1909! Most likely from the 40's. The dates on the Wheats are (2)No Dates,(2)10,11,16-d,19,19-d,25,26-d,30-d,32-d,35,(2)35-d,36-d,(2)37-d,37-s,38,38-d,39,39-s,(5)40-d,(2)40-s,(3)41-d,(2)42-d,(6)44-d,44-s,45,45-d,(2)46-d,46-s,47-d,(2)48-d,49-s, and 54-d. I also made a few Jewelery Finds. They are 1 Aluminum Medical Bracelet without a Chain that has Beverly scratched into the front of it, another Aluminum Medical Bracelet without a name on it (both say Blood Type,Serial No, and Address on the backs but none have any info), an Aluminum 2-Heart Shaped Item with the name of Lynn on the front, a Best Friends Pendant Piece, part of a Junk Chain, I believe a Pin of a Unicorn or it could be an old Earring, a small thin Silver Ring that looks to be possibly made from a Coin, a Pin with a Black Stone in the center with Clear Stones on the outer rim, another Ring that has some neat patterns in it that says BOONE on the inside and could possibly be Silver since it is Tarnished a bit, and a neat looking Turtle Cuff Link. For Misc. Items, I found an Oval Piece of Metal???, some other Flat Metal item that is folded a few times, an Old Buckle, an Old Key, another Old Key that says Briggs & Stratton on it, and a Small Bottle with a Plastic Twist Off Cap. I hope you enjoyed looking at all the finds I made this last weekend and I wish you all some Good Luck and HH on your next outings. Thanks for Looking![attachment 69660 DirtyWheats.jpg][attachment 69661 CleanedWheats.jpg][attachment 69662 DirtyJewelery.jpg][attachment 69663 CleanedJewelery.jpg][attachment 69664 DirtyMisc..jpg][attachment 69665 CleanedMisc..jpg]

I've been doing that 99% of the time anymore...but not by choice. I just don't have anyone to hunt with. That's why I enjoyed the forum hunt so much as I got to hunt with others. Congrats on your great finds. That half dime I found made only the slightest chirp on my 6" excelerator but i remembered the sound from the one I found before...that and the fact that I knew I was hunting 15 feet from where I found the first one. I also got a decent hit on the smart find screen and the exact same bounce of the crosshair.

Getting the needed Experience under one's belt is all it takes to make some great finds with some of those weird signals we all come across during our hunts. Good thing you remembered what the signal was like from the 1st Half Dime. Continued Success, Good Luck and HH.

Sure was a lot of digging. I really was surprised this last time with all the Wheat Pennies that I was finding. It took a while to start plucking the Silver out but once I got into the Silver Groove, there was nothing stopping me except it getting dark out. I will be going back once again this next weekend if the weather cooperates with my plans. Would love to find 22 Silver next weekend which would surpass my Silver Total from last year. I would love to attend the Next Hunt if Golddigger and Mike Moutray do another next year. Would love to try this Huge Park and see what kind of Silver and such I could pull even though I don't have any way of knowing what is Old and what is Newer. Still would be a ton of fun. Thanks again Crow-Duck and Continued Success, Good Luck and HH to you on your next outing as well.:detecting:

Even though I am finding a lot of Silver and other Older Coins, you sure have the History and the Really Old Sites and Old Coins that date back almost 200 yrs or so. Even though you find only 1 or 2 Coins on an outing, they are the Large Cents or Colonial Coppers that I could only dream about finding here. I am sure there is sites in your area that yield just as many Old Coins as I have here, it just takes some Research and/or Luck to run across these sites. Remember! Baseball and Horse Racing was BIG back in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Maybe some Ball Diamonds you have passed on due to looking too new just may hold the Coins from a Century Ago NH Bob! Keep them Large Cents and Colonials coming NH Bob! I love seeing you post them Beauties that I can only wish of finding one day. Continued Success, Good Luck and HH.

Is the fairground in a small town or a bigger size town. Just curious, I have found some nice hunting in smaller town parks and just curious about this site. No names or detail needed just general info.

What a haul, and a nice haul at that.
As much as you find in a hunt, looks like you have a spot that will produce a good while. That has to be nice to have a spot to produce like that.
Congrats James

Let's just say it is in a bigger Town. Exactly how Big? Really haven't payed too much attention on the Population below the sign. But the Town is good sized. I haven't even looked for a Park or any other site to try yet since there is plenty of Silver and other finds here at the Fairground Area. This site isn't virgin either! It has been worked hard but not with a smaller Coil. Lots of Coins were masked with the Stock Coils due to the Trash and Iron in the ground and I am finding some of these Coins with this technique I am using so far. And you are right about Smaller Town Parks and such. Sometimes they can be Loaded with Oldies! Thanks again for the Compliment and Good Luck and HH to you. :detecting:

It sure beats going out and digging Clad but Clad also adds up for new Accessories or what ever one needs at that point in time. It's been a blast ever since I bought my Explorer XS from Rick(ND). Maybe this Winter, I will add up All Old Coins and come up with a total since fall 2001. Bet I would even surprise myself in knowing the totals! But as time goes on, the Sites will start to become harder and harder to find, especially with this amount of finds in them. I just hope that by the time the Sites start to shut down for me, that Minelab will come out with a New Detector that gets an additional 6" of Depth along with the ability to keep Separating Items in the ground effectively and that will open up all the Hunted Out Spots once more. Going for 22 Silver this next weekend and If I make it, I will be one happy Camper! I give this Site a few more Weekends if that, and then it will be time to move onto something different. Hate getting burned out on one particular Site especially when they start slowing way down for finds. Hopefully, you will hit a spot in your neck of the woods that will produce just as well as the one I am currently at. Good Luck and HH!

I've done small field tests on the T2, MXT and now I'm trying out the Tasoro Cortes.
Just for the sake of showing them, here are a couple firsts for me.
This is an 1821 Large cent only 389,000 minted.

This is my first 1787 CT. copper. Plenty of 1788s.

I recently bought a used Cortes, the 5.75 coil make's a HUGE difference with the Cortes. I almost sold mine but have come to like it more. If it hit's on 95, even a little and the signal hold's when you increase the disc, it's usually a coin. I notice that mine will disc out crown caps easily. What do you think of it? I will keep an eye on the Tesoro forum if you want to post there about the Cortes.

Rarest Coin that I have found so far, as Mintage goes for, is a 1901-s Barber Dime (593,022). Also found the 1896-o Barber Dime with a Mintage of 610,000. Sure would be exciting to pop out a Coin that had a Date in the Late 1700's to the Early 1800's. The Coins that you found look to be in nice condition considering how long they were laying in the dirt. Great Finds!!! Good to know you have been able to test out a few other Detectors. They all have their place and time to be used I am sure. Good Luck and HH with what ever machine you are using. :detecting:

Wow James, you really are hauling it in again. I did some water hunting Friday and got 3 rings and $13.00 in clad. One cheapie, one gold mens wedding band and one girls class ring.
