Weekend Finds....Strange Barber Quarter

Not much luck this weekend. Was hoping for some nice silver or a few more Indian head cents. Yesterday all I could manage was a no date and 1920 Buffalo nickel. Today I dug the 1943-P war nickel and late in the hunt I get a high pitched tone that sounded good but hit a couple notches lower on the smart screen than where silver usually hits. It was deep so a dug down about 8 inches and pulled the coin from the ground. At first I thought it was a half cent but I rubbed some dirt off and could recognize it was a Barber quarter. No sign of silver on the coin but I've dug some really bad tarnished silver from this park in the past. Got her home and rinsed in water, then hit it with some baking soda. Coin only weighs 5.0 grams when a Barber should weigh 6.25. It also doesn't have the nice silver sound when I drop it on the counter top. I'm guessing its counterfeit. Oh well, still a neat find.

I still think it`s cool, ED, all I got today was two green wheaties, I haven`t cleaned em up yet. HH

That certainly is interesting. Maybe it's just that worn-out and rotted that it seems counterfeit. Nice finds !!

Even if that Barber may be counterfeit it still is very cool. Most likely an old counterfeit. The ones I've seen were lead or lead based. If you rub the edge on a piece of paper and it leaves a mark, chances are it's lead. I bet it really has a story to tell. HH

yea ed very odd looking barber but that just give it sex appeal lol still very cool finds congrates at least were hunting again spring is here

Rick(ND) found a counterfeit Barber Quarter years ago and just found out recently when he sold some Silver to the coin shop. Thing sounds more like plastic or something when dropped onto a counter. Neat find though and always an added bonus to your trinkets if you have them in a display case. Best of Luck and HH to you on your next hunt out for Silver.
