Some friends let us hunt their yard on Sunday. House built in 1940. It was a very pleasant, sunny day. Temps in the sixties. My better half was using her Ace 250 with sniper as usual and I was using my GTI 2500 with 5"x10" double "D" Scorcher search coil. Found a ton of No rings or jewelry. Not even junk. I did find an old junk brooch and some old buttons. A hand full of wheat pennies and about four or five bucks worth of clad between us. Wifey really outdid me as usual. She got her first war nickel(1942), a '42 standing liberty quarter, a '42 merc, and a '61 quarter. I found the '54 Franklin half and a '61 Rosie.
We let the home owners keep the wheat pennies and the '54 Franklin half. They were tickled. I think they've lived there a little less than ten years. All in all it was a great day. We had a blast. It's been months since I found any silver.Happy Hunting!

Hey thanks guys!Yeah, I was actually shocked that we did so well in the silver department. It was a fun day. Oh yeah, I flubbed up and said that was a '42 standing liberty quarter that my wife found. They weren't very deep at all actually.Maybe three or four inches. In fact, we were diggin' clad coins deeper than some of these silvers were

Hey man, you'll find a half dollar some day soon. It's right around the corner. Here's my advice(for what it's worth). Do a Google map of your town/city or a nearby city that allows metal detecting in their city parks. Call the local parks department to see if they allow metal detecting or better yet, send them an e-mail so that you can print up the response and keep it with you. Best to have permission in writing. Okay now, look at the Google MAP view. NOT satellite. City parks will show up as green in color on the map view. Then, you can zoom in and look on a satellite view to make sure a particular park is in a residential area. Most parks are in residential areas. Then look on the areas county tax assessor/collector website to see what year the houses in that area were built. You can look these up by street name/street number. Look for the oldest areas. Alot of city's park departments have a website with information on what year the park was comissioned. Alright now, with this knowledge and permission, of course, go to the older area parks and metal detect around large shade trees, picnic tables and any other areas where you may believe people would have congregated(and still do). Set the discrimination high on your machine, so that you can knock out all the junk, pulltabs, bottle caps, screwcaps, nails, whatever. Even knock out lower denomination coins. Dollars and half dollars hit high up on the discrimination scale so you'll want to dial out(or notch out) everything but the very top of the discrimination scale. Search these older areas deligently and frequently and you will find that half dollar to add to your collection.
Hey, even knock on some doors of some of those older homes and ask if they'll let you metal detect their yard. What have you got to loose? The worst that can happen is they say no. Best of luck to you. Happy Hunting!

Wow, killer! I just did a toboggan hill yesterday and got a handd full of clad (ground is still frozen). I sure like/appreciate old silver.
