What a day!!!

Hi All,
Hit a couple of spots I have hit before. The Safari keeps finding them!!! It was a dime and wheatie kinda day. 6 mercs, 2 rosies, 16 wheats. The dimes were coming in at 37-38. 5+ inches on most. One rosie was a good 37-38 with a bump to 39. Sweet sound included. The wheats were 36-37 up to 10 inches. All but two of the coins were found in the yard I have been hitting since last summer were I found the 1891 IH. I went diagonally and it really paid off. Only found 22 clad coins all day. Very little trash.
The 2 spoons and bird tag were yesterdays finds. Both spoons were deep, the silver one was under a root and came in at 37-38. The full spoon rang up at 15. Was expecting a nickel. Hard to believe that I missed it the last few times I have been there. I know my coil swept over that area. I am still researching the bird tag. No luck so far.
I really like the 58 dog tax tag. It is labeled St. Petersburg. Found a newer one later in the day at my second site.
The shoe buckle ( I am assuming it is a shoe buckle) is a neat find.
Well that makes 18 silvers for the month so far. I am going to ride this train as far as it will take me!!

Thanks Marty, We will hit it soon I hope.

Way to go Bunker!! Looks like you got a great spot! HH

Bunky- Another great hunt, there. While many of us can only count down the frigid days of winter, and pray for early thaw, you certainly have remained on fire. What have you changed (if anything) in your searching technique and/or safari set-up to account for such a successful and wide array of finds at a site that you've previous hunted ?

Bunker,

Nice day of recoveries! Today we are getting our first real snow here in the Burg, expecting 4-8 inches so I have to dig vicariously by watching you folks that can get out.

Thanks All,

Ken...I started thinking about your post and realized that have have changed a few things. First, I went back to C&J mode instead of All Metal. Secondly, I was wearing my headset due to the street noise nearby. Third, I do go back over areas in a different direction and that seems to have made a huge difference in hitting something that I didn't see before. But the biggest thing is that I think the light switch really clicked a couple of months ago. Now I am hearing things and understanding what it is telling me a bit better. Of course I still dig trash, but most of the time I can say, "Oh that it why it was giving me a 39" ( flat can bottom ) Memorials are still driving me crazy at 38. I have really ramped up the nickel count the past month and a half. If I get a 13-15 with any bounce to 12 it is trash. (Never found anything good at 12) Only occasionally will I get trash and not a nickel with a solid 13-14. Silver war nickels will bounce a little higher. But if I am in an area where there is relatively little trash, I am digging most everything. Still, with all the targets I have dug, a gold ring has eluded me.
These numbers are for my soil type here in Florida. Sandy soil (tough to dig a plug) with very little to no mineralization.

Bunker

Thanks Tom, I will do my best not to disappoint you!!! lol

Bunky- Thanks for the explanation. Yeah, we only learn to improve our skills by applying what we've learned from sharing knowledge, and feedback from other md'ers . I agree, so far nothing good found at 12 or even 40.
As Tom writes, same weather here in central jersey, morning commute crazy, should've worked vo (virtual office ) today..everning commute ? I don't even want to think about it.

Guys,

If you are in an area where colonial or american civil war relics may be present do not ignore signals that show a TID of 12. Brass cuff sized buttons with gilt ring in consistently at 12 and are targets that I would not want to walk away from.

Just a humble opinion,
TomH

Will definitely keep that in mind. Would love to hunt an area that had colonial targets!!!
Thanks TomH.
Bunker

I'll dig tid's of 12 all day.....Way more often then not I'll come up with a nickle... TID'S of 14-15 are rarely a nickle in my ground... Just thought Id let ya know..

Can't wait for spring.. Mark ( ohio )

Bunker,

The only definite Colonial artifact that I have dug is a domed pewter cuff-sized button from an Inn that was built in 1780. Washington is documented to have spent some time there during the Whiskey Rebellion and it served as an inn through the 1920s. Unfortunately, we can't dig the main property anymore because it is currently on the market for a paltry $750,000.

The button didn't have a shank but still had the two dots of solder where the shank was attached. It was down about 8-9 inches and standing perfectly vertical. Little chirp of a tone and a repeatable 9 TID.

TomH

Thanks TomH,
I have a friend that grew up about 12 miles from Washington's winter HQs. His house is on about 5 acres. I think I can talk him into a hunt or two. Will definitely be asking about those numbers when the time comes.

Bunker,
Awesome finds!.......thanks for posting and please keep posting your finds because you encourage us all to keep swinging!:detecting:
Just a comment on the Safari. I have read posts on how people have been disappointed with the Safari and in defence of the Safari, I have come to the conclusion that they were either not willing to learn from the start or did not have the patience to learn what this great machine was telling them.
Contrary to what has been said, the Safari is not a "turn on and go" machine. There is definitely a learning curve which can take a lengthy amount of time to master (do we ever arrive at that point where we do master it?) and even then, we as Safari owners continue to learn.
I realise that we all need to feel 'comfortable' with our machines so there is an aesthetics side as well as a technological and efficiency side as well to consider. It may not be the very best machine on the market but it serves me very well.
Yesterday, I went to a park that I never knew was there and someone recommended that I check it out, and Bam,Bam,Bam,Bam,Bam, the coins kept coming and I ended up with a bagful. Nothing outstanding but I have confidence that IF there were silver or gold underneath me, it would have told me! I have found silver and gold in many areas, mountains, desert, beaches etc; and different states with my Safari and I have found it to be a very versatile metal detector.
If a Safari owner from the get go regard their machine as a friend that is working for and with you and not against you with all those multi tones...it will detect and tell you what there is underneath you and will tell you as best it can what the size and composition of the metal is, you will get great results! The Safari is my primary detector and although everyone should have a back-up, it will remain my primary metal detector until they come out with new technology which I hope they do soon.
I have a nephew who is a professor in electro-mechanics and I have asked him to design a 'gold only' metal detector which he is currently working on. When he develops that and I hope he can, I will put my Safari in a closet, but for now, it will be the first one I grab out of the trunk when I metal detect!!.......any comments? agree or disagree? feel free to post you thoughts!!

Tom- that's good to know and will hopefully remember to draw upon that if/when a colonial site is available.
Mark- Sounds like location, location, location.....my jersey nickels are always tid 14, with a rare 15 thrown in just to keep me honest.
Goldstrike- well put, couldn't have said it better myself...thanks for posting

Hey Goldstrike,
Thank you for your input, I know you put some thought into it. The Safari is my first machine so I can't really speak to the others. I purchased mine last March and have been very happy with its performance. It does take some time and effort to learn all the sounds and TID numbers and how they correlate to each other. I can't complain with the Safari and the finds I have been able to recover lately. I am really starting to be "one" with it. I believe that some may have an aversion to newer technology and change itself. Some have been using one brand or another for years and maybe just don't like listening to all those "conflicting" tones. Others embrace change and adapt to those new technologies. As younger and more video game era detectorist join the hobby, it will seem more natural to them. They will be able to adapt much easily then you or I. ( I am assuming you are not a teen! LOL) But that is why they make more then one kind of machine!!! Just because you don't understand it doesn't make it a bad machine.
To each his own, I would love to try some other machines myself. Especially the F75 LTD. I am toying with getting an Etrac.
HH,
Bunker

Hey Bunker,
I think you summed up the point when you said "To each his own" We all have our own techniques and skills and experiences based on who we are, the states we live in with all the very different soil and terrain conditions and what we use in terms of M.D-er's and tools. No, unfortunately I'm not a teenager anymore and I will be 60 in March but I have the body of a 21 year old!!! and have 120 over 80 blood pressure which comes from metal detecting the beaches, mountains, deserts and parks here in SoCal!!! and so I keep myself physically fit.
I dare say if I was to put one of my metal detectors in the hands of one of my 4 kids who are very technologically savy, it would take them all of 5 minutes to learn the tones and everything else what has/is taking us months/years to learn!!!....you know what I mean!!.....So....what works for one may not work for another and so I believe like you.....To each his own!!! ....Don't you just love this hobby!!!
They will have to pry my metal detector out of my dead cold hands for me to give this hobby up!!!....just kidding[:clapping:/size]
