What a difference 30 - 35 feet can make.....

Took the dynamic duo (E-TRAC and X-TERRA 705) out to an old homesite today. Found one IH cent with each. Even though these two coins were found within 30 - 35 feet of each other, there is a huge difference in their conditions. The 1893 rinsed off and (other than the color) looks like it was lost the day it left the mint. The 187? is about as worn and corroded as they can be. Regardless, I've got it soaking in olive oil over night, just to make sure of the date. When you get the light just right, and look real close, it looks enough like an 1877 to give me hope! HH Randy

Wouldn't that be your 3rd?--that would really be something. Most of the old pennies that come out of the ground in my neck of the woods look worse than your corroded one. They end up being so fragile that once they are exposed to the air, the green patina dries up and flakes off. I wish there was some way to preserve them better. Your 1893 does look just minted (except for the color of course). Congratulations and I hope the second one is another 1877! Thanks for sharing.

Yep, that's a huge difference for such a small distance. Have to wonder if something was spilled there to corrode it so much.

That's the problem with IHs and coppers. You can't do much to clean them and improve them. IF you get the crud off, you wind up with a coin covered in pits. The other IH looks great!
