What am I doing wrong

I went out with a few friends the other day, one of them has the xp deus with a 9 inch coil, I have the 11 inch is the only difference. My friend with the 9 inch coil helped me get set up before we hunted with the same program he was using. We hunted for a few hours and all met at this one location. While there we all went over a target they said it was a quarter, while my numbers were jumping around I thought Trash. They did dig up a quarter. My only finds for this hunt was a Toy car and one penny. I was ready to quit the xp at that point and go get another machine.

it took me a long time to learn what this machine was telling me. And I did want to throw it away a few times. Be patient. GO SLOW. put some targets in your yard to practice on. Get Andy Sabisch's book. keep at it.

Practice with coins right on the limit of the Deus reach. Put them on the ground and pull the coil up till the signal almost quits. That sweet sound is what you want, number jump or not. Train yourself to those kinds of sounds. Hunt slowly and return to any signal that seems to produce even a hint of those sounds. The other advice about slowing down and Andy's book are great as well.

Good luck, Don

Hi Waterdog,,
Interesting post,, I've got both the 9" & the 11" coil, and for sure you can not set a program to suite both coils,, as the 11" doesn't require as much sensitivity as the stock 9" coil, for a start!

I reckon when you met, and went over your target, the "quarter" maybe it had some iron nearby, that your 11" coil picked up, that the 9" didn't ? Thus giving you a mixed audio? Just a thought .

Hey,,, don't give up on the Deus,, it's a fantastic machine, but you need to experiment in your own settings, and don't rely on other folks settings,,,, remember ,,, different coils,, different settings!
Hope this helps...
Best of luck..... Dave.

Like one of my older machines . I just have to hang around and find out what she is telling me, Once I get that figured out I'm sure she be a great machine. Thanks for the help all

Your post makes me wonder about why you couldn't see it as a quarter or at least a diggable target with the same program running. I think both of the other comments are good places to start. The book is a must. My thought is some sort of ground balance issue. You don't mention it but what mode were you in? Tracking mode when over a target can be a problem as it starts to see the target as part of the ground as you sweep back and fourth. I really think changing machines is not a good idea. I know lots of guys who have had 4 or 5 different units in pretty fast secession they continue to whine that this or that is wrong and the new unit will solve it all. The problem is that they never learn any one of the machines. This hobby finds most of the good targets from zero to six inches and almost any machine will do it. Get a decent machine and learn it well.

When your detecting and the older guy shows up with an older detector with wires hanging off and lots of knobs. Don't laugh he's had that machine for years and knows it inside and out and he will quick your ass if you're not careful with your 3rd brand new machine of the year.

First most important swinging speed and coil position to ground. Sweep slowly and overlap each swing. Setup machine. GB. Manual -3 from traded value Disc. 0 TX 2 Reactivity 2 Silencer -1. MULTITONE. Try this and resetup it to your conditions. Sensitivity 85 to 95.

One thing that I'm trying to keep in mind is that the Deus's strength is the audio output. Which means that until your brain gets trained, you won't get the best out of it. I have many, many hours to go :)

I don't mind leaving a site with a bag full of trash, because I also have the knowledge that if something good HAD been there, I'd have found it. In fact, Monday I searched a lot which I had been over before. This time I found only trash and one memorial penny. But it was still fun...

My guess is the same as Dave H's guess - that there was iron near the quarter and that the 9" coil unmasked the quarter better being a smaller coil. I suspect had you been using a similar good working 9" coil you'd have seen it pretty much the same way. The 9" coil is going to be a better unmasking coil while the 11" is going to be deeper just the laws of physics.

So I don't think it's a case of not knowing what the detector is telling you necessarily in this case but you simply saw the differences in the coils being used. If your site is full of iron trash (nearly all of mine are) then could pick up a 9" coil, OR use a high trash type program and maybe modify it to help it separate targets like using higher reactivity, to work best in that environment.
