What coil should someone use on V3i at the beach?

As Mandad said, the two concentric coils work best at the beach and are less prone to falsing.

The standard D2 coil will work just fine if you wach the sensitivity ... normaly on a beach the good stuff is not very deep and the more sand you search the better your odds of finding that really good item.
If you want depth then go to the 12"/300 coil.
A concentric coil will detect deeper than a DD but the cone gets smaller the deeper it goes.
At 9" you might be searching a spot the size of a silver dollar so work them very slowly and overlap a lot.

If you had to use 1 machine on beaches with black sand would, you
be happy with just theV31 or go to Minelab.
Thanks Joe

Check the forum name, what do you think the guys here will say? Better to ask this on the general forum. JMHO.

Black sand gives a lot of detectors a hard time finding targets, I think the Pulse detectors are the detector of choice in black sand.
