What could it be?

Hey everybody. I need your help identifying this object. I was metal detecting at my grandmothers house and found this item. It is about the size of a half dollar & is thin in thickness. There is some writing on the top part, but I can't make it out. The writing is a bit more clear from the back side, but still not readable. I asked my Grandmother, but she doesn't know what it is. It sort of has a basketball look to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

What looks like writing might be the laces of a basketball. I think it is the bottom part of a basketball ribbon award.

I think you are right Mr. Larry. I do think that the "writing" is actually laces on a basketball. Thanks everyone for the help.

First thought is a watch fob or athletics award ribbon hanger.
