What happens when the coil is bad??

SE-5

New member
OK, the best I can come up with is my coil, on my just over 2 week old unit, is bad. For those of you that have had their's replaced, what was it doing... how was your CTX acting??? Think I would rather have my motorcycle in the shop than my CTX!!!!

Unfortunately I've been hearing this a lot of this topic a bit too much lately, I am a victim of a bad coil too. My ctx was falsing with every swing (to the left) and when I would rest the coil down on the sand or ground, my TID numbers were all over the place too.

When my coil is "bad" I give it a Time Out and it's not allowed to play its XBOX for a whole day. :)

LOL, don't joke because when it's bad all you'll be doing is playing XBOX for weeks until you get it back from Minelab ;)

You probably have already done this but there are a couple of things to try. Do a total reset. (I forget how the manual says to do that but its there) Pull the shaft apart and ensure the coil cable is securely fastened. Unscrew them, ensure no pins are bent, etc., then put them together again. I would also leave the power box back a few inches and swing tghe coil and try to move the cables a bit. Just to isolate cable, coil or head unit. Try to make sure the coil cable is not all twisted and in a knot right below the power box.

Does it give you "Coil not recognized" or something to that effect on the screen? That would mean no communication between the head unit and the coil so it would be a bad coil or cable, either way it goes back.

Any hunting buddies near you, so you can swap coils for a few minutes? I suppose you dont have the small coil or you would have already done that! When mine went bad it would work okay for a few minutes then there was total silence and the screen said something like "Coil not recognized" or therabouts. My dealer was kind enough to give me his big coil till the bad one was replaced. Then we got the small coils and all is well.

Don't forget to take the coil cover off and clean under it. If you hunt in mineralized soil, and some bits of it get trapped under the coil cover, it can cause the MD to false.

Provided you have a coil cover, my ctx didn't come with one. Where did you get yours?

MIne came attached. Am I assuming the plastic cover on the bottom isn't the same as the one my ETRAC had? Haven't taken it off, but it looks just like the one my ETRAC came with.

did the reset, many times, removed and cleaned coil cover, connections were checked and double checked... don't have an xbox!

Daytonagold, mine is doing just what you said yours was doing. It never did a communication failure, just going nuts, big time. Don't know of anyone around here with one, and or course it's my only coil.... calling Minelab tomorrow morning....

Minelab made me ship the entire machine, not just the coil. So don't think your home free with an extra coil 'cause your gonna have to a wrap that detector up like a mummy and ship it off for a few weeks.

Great... it came in a cover box so tomorrow after I speak with them, I'll repack it and slip it in the other box. When I first opened it I thought to myself, I should take a photo of how it's packed, just in case..... guess just in case means just get it packed!

Houston Texas, use to live in Del Rio and San Antonio, wish I still did. No Sir, I live in Seattle, land of the rain, rain and more rain.

Or your bad coil coil could be like mine; it didnt work, brand new out of the box. The dealer connected a 17" coil to the machine and it worked OK. The coil has been sent back to Minelab and I'm waiting for a new one. Not real happy.

Regards,

Col

Yes Sir, I loved Laughlin! My nephew is there now, young 2nd Lt., flight training.
