What is it about outhouses?

I have seen several posts discussing digging out old out house pits. Why? Did people toss garbage in them that may be interesting now? There's no way that I would want to dig out valuables that I hid under four feet of turds, back in the day.

As the warden reminds me when I take off my detecting boots. Change your socks!!

People drop all sorts of things into the holes of outhouses. Whether on purpose or not, few folks with try and retrieve what's been lost. Fast forward about 50 years, and most of the waste has long-since turned to soil. You find coins, false teeth, keys, bottles, and somethings you don't want to talk about.

There is one thing to remember, however. Some bacterias last a long time, and you have to wear appropriate protection gear. Dig deep enough (excuse the pun), and you just might get rich!

Aside from what was normally lost out of pockets, as the pit filled up people used it as a dump to get rid of everything. Many old, valuable bottles, china, silverware, can be found in these pits. They are a treasure pit.

Yeah some privy diggers came through our neighborhood a few years back and found some really nice stuff including some very expensive bottles. They use plat maps from the courthouse to locate the homes of their choice. Many of the homes in our neighborhood were built in the very early 1900's and late 1800's.

I actually have one that I have always intended to dig out, I just have not gotten to it yet. My wife and I bought an old farm house here in upstate NY and our historical society did a book on outhouses and ours is in it! We bought a copy of the book, so my wife dosen't want me to tear it down.:garrett:

wow, this thread is still active! and look how much time it takes to read it now... whoa.. a 'turd of my coffee break... holy crap!

Yeah I knew that Crapper invented the crapper and his name is legend and will go down in toilet history.

PS
There's a guy in our phone book here named Peter Yanker. How'd you like to go through life with that handle. I knew a guy in Phoenix named Peter Hole. Do parents actually think when they dream up these names?
