What is ment by " V rated coils" ?

stevene2440

New member
I just bought a Brand New V3i !!!! But she is in the mail... I'm confused by the V rating on certain coils...
Which ones are? & Which ones are not?
I would like to get SEF coils for her since I have used a 15x12 on an Explorer, but I have read that they are not V-Rated..
What does it mean, what does it mean?
This baby will be used to mostly go to the beach and look for gold in the streams...OK, the parks too...
So I guess every aspect she was made for..
But like most girls, she has friends to help her out to do what she cant do...Excal, Infini and couple others...
So please help me understand....Thankx....:please:

The SEF are not V rated. V rated coils have a tighter null between the two coils. This is needed because of the 22.5 khz frequency. Non V rated coils may or may not allow higher RX settings. All Whites coils except the 1400 can be had in a V rated coil.[attachment 165126 ani_einstein.gif]............Rob

I have the 10x12 and 12x15 SEFs for my V3i. They work perfectly well so long as you keep the Rx down!! I can get Rx 12 to 15 on my stock coil whereas running the same settings with the SEF I need to drop Rx to something in the range 6 to 8. As others have said, it is the 22.5KHz frequency that is the main issue, so running with this single frequency is a no-no but the other single freqs work fine as do the 3-freq modes. Any other questions please ask.

What other coils do you have for it?
With the gain cut like that, how mush depth are you losing ? If any?
I hate to say it but I'm newbie to whites. But not to the Blue & Green Monsters...
Thank you for your great responses

I have the stock coil and a (currently defective) 6x10.
I consider the SEFs specialist coils - good for quiet areas (both) and for doing a quick check and hoard check (12x15). Both are very good on the dry beach.
Cutting the Rx must reduce depth I guess but I've not done any scientific tests. The 10x12 seems about as deep or a bit deeper than the 10" but it has a very sharp response that I like.
The 12x15 is a heavy beast but you can cover ground quickly so I use it for scan searches before concentrating with other coils on the hotspots when my arm gets sore!
