What is the Gain?

Where do you see the word “gain” in the manual?

It is a high gain machine and probably pre set.
You can only adjust sensitivity.

not adjustable. It's a preset amount, all you can change is the receiver gain aka the sensitivity.

True on sensitivity....but gain can also adjust modulation....which recovery speed can do some what as well.

Hi IDX. Page 34 and page 50. Why do you ask?

I want to read what it says this time around....thanks for the page numbers.

Another way to modulate targets is ....... get headphones with piezos instead of speakers.

Why is that? and how can you tell if they have piezo elements?

You look at it. If its a flat plate, its a piezo. Otherwise it looks like a speaker cone.

Modulating the audio to try to determine the depth of a target is hard to do accurately because different coins are different sizes. If looking for OLD coins, I will use the DURATION of the audio to determine depth... very short “blip” and a tight pinpoint will indicate a deeper coin. The “coil lift test” will tell you also, along with using the depth meter after a very exacting centering of the target is done. I feel this is more accurate than only going by audio, although when those other things are in line and telling you it’s a deeper item, you WILL notice something different about the audio. It is markedly weaker on deep coins and perhaps a bit “broken” as you sweep over the center with tight short sweeps. All of this will change somewhat according to the Recovery speed used, so it’s best to pay close attention to the site and your needs within it.
To me, piezo elements sound like crap. They are not an “audiophile” type device in any sense of the word, though they have gotten better. Generally they’re used in small electronics and in our world, waterproof headphones. There’s no “musicality” that comes from these, but in this case we’re not going for sound quality, rather...variances in volume. For a target to be reported at all, it has to pass a couple of “tests”. The machine has to determine that it is strong enough to make it past the limitations applied via the Sensitivity control and it has to be something that is not discriminated. The Sensitivity setting is where you may or may not get modulation in the audio, typically with this machine the coins have to be fairly deep to be able to notice it. There really is no control on these designed to do what it is you’re looking for, although SOME modulation does exist in the audio on coins at 6”+....
