What is this?

If you bought it used, someone added a snap-on ferrite filter that is supposed to reduce EMI. It looks like they put a heat shrink cover on it too. It will not hurt anything but probably is doing no good either.
 
I've never seen one from Whites. I have to agree with Larry. If it isn't used let me know.

UK has stringent laws regarding emissions (EMI). Ferrite collar on search coil cable reduces EMI to within UK law. Typically factory installed on standard equipment search coils sold in the UK. Recently some have came to think it might help reduce external noise, juries still out. If it does, it isn't by much.
