This last Road Trip out turned out to be a good one with little driving in between sites and finding keepers early in the day. Some say that it doesn't matter how much research a person does that sites like these don't exist anymore".....but..........you would almost think that my finds would speak for themselves. One good thing though......the ones that don't think research helps and think that the sites are no longer out there, the more for the ones that take time to research sites and go work them and bring home more goodies for their collections.
I would also like to add again that this forum is for posting a persons finds, no matter how great or how small they may be. Some have sites with more potential than others and this shouldn't stop anyone from posting their finds since they worked just as hard as the next guy to find them. There should not be any jealousy issues or grudges just because a person finds more than the other guy either and if there is it should not escalate into a string of negative comments and ganging up on each other. We come here to see what others are finding and to get any advice from others that may help out in the field to increase others finds, it either being a Newbie or even a Seasoned Hunter. Due to the latest events about my finds, I would like the non-sense to stop since I'm sure that some of the people that just joined have witnessed all of this and I'm sure some have doubts about posting their finds after seeing this. I've been hunting with the Explorer since Fall 2001 and have well over 1,000 hours logged onto it along with a ton of research done to find some of the sites I have been detecting since I have joined this forum. To me....this is the greatest forum for posting your finds and I would like for everyone to post whatever finds they may find and to ask whatever advice they seek no matter what happens on this forum. The sooner you act on getting tips the better off you will do out in the field and can start posting some of your great finds for all of us to see and comment on. We all need to get along since we all share the same recreational activity we call Metal Detecting and should not accuse people of things that their is no proof too and would never do. Now with that said, onto my finds.
Friday Night, it was Club Meeting Night and Chris(SoCenWI) was in the area and he came by for part of the meeting to meet a few of the guys in the Club and the ones I go hunting with regularly. It was great to see and chat with you again Chris and hope to get out with you before you head back to Wisconsin. Thanks for showing up and once again....congrats on all those goodies you brought with to show me and others. Good Luck and HH to you like always buddy!
Saturday, Tim, I, and Dale headed out at 5am to go look over a Park Site in a town that we had not visited yet. I decided to bring my County Book with since this town was in it. As we got closer to our destination, we got side-tracked like usual when we came across a Church out in the country. We started hunting this and at first I didn't think there was going to be much found since I had only found 1 Wheatie, a Buffalo Nickel, a War Nickel and a Regular 1942 Jefferson Nickel in one little area, about 10' in circumference. It was starting to get warmer out so I decided to walk over to the car and take the sweat shirt off. Good thing I did too! I threw it into the car and turned around and decided to search by the vehicle since this was the front of the Church and possibly where people would have stopped to drop off others going to Church for the day. I didn't even get 8' away from the car and got a very loud 28 on Digital that showed about 6"-8" Deep. I dug down and a Silver Rosie surfaces. I was kinda shocked at first since I must have hunted at least a half hour to 45 minutes and had only found the 4 keepers so I never thought Silver was still in this site. I thought that it had been picked over pretty well by someone else but that was soon to change my mind on that. I walked along the road which was only about 15' or so in length and decided to do a Pattern. I turned around and headed back towards the car again and about 4' away, I got another 28 on Digital at about the same Depth. I dug down and another Rosie surfaced. I was starting to get a bit excited now and kept an eye out for Dale and Tim to see where they were and if they were digging also. Tim was digging quite a bit over on one side of the Church so I thought he had hit a good spot as well and Dale was digging a bit too but not as much. Anyways, I finished up the second run and turned to go the other direction again. I got about half-way and got another 28 at the same Depth. Now I was kickin' it into Road Gear and new this was another Silver. I dug down and out pops a Merc from about 8" Deep. I covered the hole and got a move on since I wanted to get what I could before Tim or Dale came around. I got down to the end and come back towards the car and got...you guessed it....another Deep 28 on Digital. I just couldn't believe that this stuff was still there but it was so I dug another plug and another Merc comes out of the ground. ALRIGHT!!! 4 Silver in a row! I then did 3 swipes without getting another signal and thought that was the end of the Silver Run. Wrong! Just as I turned to make the 4th pass, I got a nice Deeper Signal that read 28 but jumped to 30 once in awhile. This was next to the gravel road in the Church Yard and the Depth Meter was showing a good 10" Deep on the Target. So...I got down and started to dig to see what it was. There was a lot of gravel here so it wasn't easy to dig in but when you get them Deep Signals that read like Silver, you will almost dig through anything to get to the Target. Anyways, I finally got down about 6" or maybe a little Deeper and then it started to turn to black dirt. As soon as I seen that, I knew that there was something there that was going to be good. I dug some dirt out and stuck the Probe into the pile and it sang out. I moved the dirt around and found a Silver Washington Quarter staring back at me. YIPEE!
I then covered the hole and re-checked it with the XS. There appeared to be another Signal there but it was reading around 24 which I thought could be an Indian Head so I re-opened the plug and dug the dirt out again. I stuck the Probe into the hole and got a screamer of a Signal and it was no Indian Head Signals at that. I dug a bit more dirt out and to my
, another Silver Quarter comes out. YIPEE x 2!
I then re-checked the hole and nothing. I then covered it up and worked the area more but could not find anything else for Signals. I then moved on over to the section where Tim and Dale had started. I came across a section that was between Tim and an Old Slide and popped out a Barber Dime from about 8" Deep. I then kept walking towards a tree and got a Nickel Reading, so I dug it and what happened next was freakin' unbelievable! I stuck the Probe into the hole and the target was still in there. I dug down about 8" and seen a Nickel come loose. I picked it up and it was a V-Nickel. Great! I was lookin' fr one of those! I turned it over and wiped some dirt off. I then saw the date and just sat there in
. Looking back at me was a Coin that I had never found before and thought I would probably never find but I did and it took me a few moments for me to do anything but sit there with my jaw dropped. The date on the Nickel was 1886 and just could not believe it so I wiped it off a bit more thinking it was an 8 and not a 6 for the last digit, but it was a 6 and I was really pumped now!
Now the amount of time from the beginning of the hunt to this find was about 3-4 hours later so the site wasn't as loaded as it sounds like. The Church Yard was very big and 3 guys working it was even a chore since the Coins were spread out. Anyways, I yelled over to Tim who was about 30' away. He took his headphones off and I told him I had just pulled a V-Nickel. He said "you did?". I said "yep!". I then told him the date was 1886 and he almost soiled himself. He then went on to calling me a lucky you know what and we both started hunting again. I got up by the tree and got a small Coin Spill. It consisted of a Jefferson Nickel, couple Wheats and a Mercury Dime. I then kept working the area occasionally picking up a Wheatie. I then decided to try another location. I started hunting and started to find Older Jefferson Nickels scattered around this spot so I started to work it a bit more. After I worked it for a bit, I then decided to try it over where Tim had hunted. I got over by the road (in a section where Tim hadn't searched yet) and pulled another V-Nickel out dated 1903. I then kept searching and finally came across another Nickel Reading. I dug down and it was a Rusty Crown Cap. I then covered the hole and re-scanned it and there was now a 30 on Digital but no Coin Icon which sometimes means Iron but it just sounded too good for that so I re-opened the hole and dug a bit Deeper. Out comes a Silver Disk about the size of a Quarter and I thought I had another Quarter but it was not to be. It turned out to be a Washington State Sales Tax Token. After that find we decided to head over to that Park Site we had in mind. Tim ended up finding a Silver Quarter, a couple Silver Dimes, a couple Older Nickels including a Buffalo Nickel, the normal Wheats and 4 Indian Heads. Dale did good and popped out 2 Barber Dimes that were around EF, a few other Silver Dimes, 1 Indian Head and a few Wheats as well. I ended up pulling 2 Silver Quarters, 1 Barber Dime, 3 Mercury Dimes, 2 Roosevelt Dimes, 2 V-Nickels, 1 Buffalo Nickel, a War Nickel, 6 Older Jefferson Nickels, a Tax Token, and a few Wheats also. It was a great site to find and many goodies were pulled. Proof that a little research can go a long way into finding good sites that have what you seek still in them.
Site 2 was the Park we were looking for. We hunted this for about 2 hours or so and there were a few goodies pulled. I got a Good For Token, a Barber Dime and a few Wheats here. Tim found a Mercury Dime, a Bull Durham Token and some Wheats. Dale found a few Wheats and pulled a Franklin Half. Guess it was time for him to get one since he hasn't hunted much this season due to work. WTG Dale! You needed that! We then decided to swing by a town nearby.
On the way there, we came by another Country Church so we decided to stop there as well. It had a good sized area to the west of the Church. I got out and started to search the Parking Area in front of the Church. I ended up finding a 1982 Lincoln Penny here that was at least 10" Deep so I knew that the Ditch was filled in at one point. I then walked into the yard on the west side and started hunting this. There wasn't much found here but 1 Nice Coin was found and it was by me. Tim was hunting on the other side of the Church and came around the back side of it over into the area where I was hunting at. I told him I had pulled 2 Wheats. He hadn't found anything yet so we kept looking. Dale pulled a Wheatie I believe in the area where I got my 2. As I kept searching, I decided to walk towards the back of the lot. I got a few feet where Tim had come walking through at and got a 28 on Digital that showed about 3-4" Deep. I didn't think anything of it at the time and thought maybe a New Coin or a Wheatie. I dug down and pulled the plug back. I stuck the Lesche in and popped out some dirt. As I did that, something come flying out and landed on top of the pile. I looked down and there was a Silver Quarter sitting there. ALRIGHT!!!! Another Quarter!!!! I picked it up and seen it was a 1900 Barber Quarter. I covered the hole up and started to do a little dance while Tim looked at me from a distance. He pulled his headphones off and asked what I found. I then replied "Barber Quarter Baby!" He then replied with that "you lucky little $h1t." He then noticed where I had found it and realized he came within 3-4' of swinging over top of it. After this we hunted a bit more and Tim found a Wheatie on the way back to the car.
We also tried 2 or 3 other sites and didn't come up with anything during Saturday's outing.
We were off to the town we had in mind. We drove into the town and seen it had a smaller Park and a Ball Diamond next to it and it looked Old! We got out and started hunting. We hunted this until it was time to call it a day which was a good 2-3 hours or so. Tim ended up finding 2 Tokens, some Wheats, a Rosie and a Silver Ring. Dale found some Wheats and a Merc I believe. I ended up finding a Barber Dime, a Merc, a Good For Token and some Wheats. My Totals for Saturday were 2 Silver Quarters, 1 Barber Quarter, 3 Barber Dimes, 2 Rosie's, 4 Merc's, 3 Tokens, 23 Wheats, 1 War Nickel, 1 V-Nickels, 1 Buffalo Nickel, 6 Older Jefferson Nickels, a Cuff-Link, Copper Ring, Old Stem Valve, a 4-H Pin, 24 Clad Quarters, 22 Memorial Pennies, 18 Clad Dimes and 3 Newer Nickels along with a bunch more Junk.
Sunday, I didn't get detecting until around Noon due to sleeping in and replying to some PM's and other e-mails. I decided to head back to that Church where we got all them goodies at and see if I could get anything else from there. I hunted this for a good 2 hours or so and pulled a Buffalo Nickel, Mercury Dime, a Pin and 6 Wheaties from here.
I then decided to try another Church we came across on the way back Saturday Night. It had a good size yard and I hunted this for about an hour or so. The ground had been turned or something due to a lot of debris in the ground but I did get an Indian Head Penny (main goal on Sunday to get) and a Wheatie.
I then tried where a Church was at one time but nothing there. Didn't try it but for 30 minutes if that and moved on.
I decided to go hit a Ball Field that was about 50 miles from where I was at and started heading back that way. I come across a town and drove through it and found a Ball Diamond here. I remembered stopping here earlier this year but never tried it since it was in use at the time. I drove around the block and almost left but then decided to give it a shot. The Back Stop and all the Fencing looked really Old. I started working along the outside of the Side Lines and within about 10 minutes, I found a 1919 Wheatie. I then decided to go out in the outfield once. I got out there and started to hit an area that had a few Coins. I dug some of them and found a few Clad Coins from the 60's here. I then popped out a Silver Rosie and a few Wheats. Pretty good I thought. I then headed over to the other side of the field and come across an Indian Head Penny dated 1907. Hunted this a bit more and nothing so I decided to go try where those other Coins were at. I walked over by it and started to pop a Wheatie here and there along with more Clad from the early 60's. Then a Rosie comes out. Then another one! Then a Wheatie. I started to work this hard now and it just started to produce like crazy! I couldn't believe it!!! It seemed like the Coins were only in this one section for the most part but why? Didn't matter, I kept working it. I kept popping out Silver Rosie's, Wheats, Clad Coins and then what I thought was a Large Token surfaced. Picked it up and it was no Token! It was a Franklin Half Dollar (only my 2nd Franklin with the XS since 2001 so this was something special for me). I couldn't believe it! A Half!!!!! I kept working the area and popped a Silver Quarter out. I then decided to stop since this was getting crazy and was actually worried about what everyone would think on here when I posted my finds for this weekend. I put the detector in the car and decided to call Tim up. I called him and told him I didn't know what I should do. I told him that they (some of you) would never believe my post now and went on to tell Tim that I just dug a Franklin Half, another Silver Quarter, and 8 Dimes. I sat there chuckling to him as I told him and he said to hell with them.....shoot for 30! I told him I already had 20 for the weekend so I took his advice and hunted for another 30 minutes or so. In that time I dug a couple more Wheats, a Merc and another Rosie along with a few more Clad as well. I almost got 4 more Silver Quarters. I got 3 Quarters in 1 hole that were dated 65,66 and 68 and about 4' away from that I dug a Deeper 65 Quarter again. I also dug a 67 Quarter with a 57 Jefferson Nickel with it. I then put the detector in the car and headed home. Talk about luck being on my side since I totally forgot about this town and Ball Diamond. It was one crazy hunt on Sunday and would have never thought that I would do that well for the amount of time I put in (Noon - 7:30pm) less about an hour drive time. That Diamond sure was Red Hot on Silver and there is still more there so another trip will be planned for sure real soon. Totals for Sunday were 1 Franklin Half Dollar, 1 Silver Quarter, 6 Rosie's, 2 Merc's, 1 Older Jefferson Nickel, 1 Buffalo Nickel, 16 Wheats, 2 Indian Heads, a Pin, 8 Clad Quarters, 11 Clad Dimes and 32 Memorial Pennies.
Totals for both days were 22 Silver. They were 1 Franklin Half Dollar dated 1960-d, 1 Barber Quarter dated 1900, 3 Washington Quarters dated 1944-d,1946,1964-d, 3 Barber Dimes dated 1900,1908,1916-s, 6 Mercury Dimes dated 1917-d,1928,1936,(2)1944-d,1945 and 8 Roosevelt Dimes dated (2)1947-s,(2)1954-d,1957,(2)1960-d and 1962-d. I found 3 Tokens this time out. They are a Good For 10 Cents In Trade / H.O. Hanson ??? So. Dak (I think So.Dak since all I can see is So. and the town name is pretty messed up also), Good for 10c In Trade / Garrett - Wilson Co-op Stores and Tax Commission Sales Tax Token State Of Washington on both sides. For Nickels, I dug 12 of them and they were 2 V-Nickels dated 1886,1903, 2 Buffalo Nickels dated 1913(after Date Restorer was used),1935, 1 War Nickel dated 1942-s and 7 Older Jefferson Nickels dated (2)1941,1941-d,1941-s,1942,1946 and1957-d. For Indian Heads, I got 2 of them and they are dated 1901 and 1907. Wheat Pennies consisted of 39 of them and they are dated 12-s,14,(3)19,(2)19-s,24,27,28,29,29-d,30-d,34-d,35,36-d,37-d,38-d,40,40-d,41-d,42,(2)44-d,44-s,45-d,45-s,46-d,(2)47-d,(2)49-d,50-d,54-d,55-d,56-d,(2)57-d and 58-d. Misc. Items included a Small Heart Shaped Item, a Copper Ring, a Safety 4-H Pin that reads County Honor Safety General Motors In Coop Ext. Ser. on the back, a longer Pin, part of a Cuff-Link, a neat item with some Decorative Designs on it that opens up, a flattened Penny and a Tire Stem that reads The Dill Mfg. Co. Pat. 04-13-1915. Clad Count was 32 Quarters, 29 Dimes, 3 Nickels and 54 Pennies. Hope you enjoyed this LONG POST! Thanks for looking and Good Luck and HH to you all out in the field!

He then replied with that "you lucky little $h1t." He then noticed where I had found it and realized he came within 3-4' of swinging over top of it.

Even if a person is too lazy to do research, there is one key thing they could do to help them improve their finds and that would be visit sites that they have never tried. I think some would be amazed if they knew just how close some good sites are if they did a little traveling from time to time. Sometimes it pays off and sometimes not....but if you keep movin' it'll pay off sometime. Thanks for the response Gold Nuggets. If I ever do up a book, I will make sure you get one. Good Luck and HH to you.
