I have a Safari coming and was wondering which of the smaller FBS coils would be best for use in high trash areas? Expect to be mostly be hunting in older sites with lots of old iron, some tin and aluminum rather than in modern day sites loaded with pulltabs, foil and can slaw. Any and all answers would be appreciated along with why you like using a certain kind of coil. Thanks, Mtnmn

What small coil is best for the Safari?

I have the 6x8 sef coil and really like it... It goes deeper than you would expect from a small coil. It has excellent separation, I found dimes at 8", great for trashy parks, which I hunt a lot. Check out Bryce's field tests in the Explorer forum, the coils are for FBS, E-trac,Explorer and Safaris, Good reviews... They sold me. HH.

[size=medium]Metal detected a park here in England and here are my finds from less than 8 hours of detecting. Almost 100 coins mostly pre-WW2 and older (Victorian) also a solid silver hallmarked piece in the shape of an 'arm' and a ARP (Air Raid Precaution) silver hallmarked WW2 badge. I am using my favorite small coil on my Safari.....an EXCELERATOR EQ2 PRO DOUBLE D 6 inch COIL. This coil really does an excellent job of singling out the coins and collectables from lot's of trash and there is no mistaking when you pass the coil over the coins as you can see from my pic's!! This would be my small coil recommendation![/size]

Want to thank all you guys who took the time to post an answer. It appears everyone is happy with whatever small coil they are using which makes my decision all the harder. At least it appears that which ever one I choose will work just fine. Have made a choice, but will leave it go at that... Thanks for your input, Mtnmn

You can try my coils out any time you want- I have the 5" Exxcelerator and the 12 x 15 Exxcelerator and they are all now mounted on lower shafts so it is easy to put on and off. I bought the 5" hockey puck on eBay for about $51.00. Just say the word. That field we worked is pretty much cleaned out now. Only found a few pennies (some are old 95% copper) but the ground around the ball field is caliche and now is hard as concrete. I used the 12 x 15 and found a copper light bulb base below about 11" of hard red caliche- hard work. Marty

The Safari is an awesome machine with any coil I've tried to date. I have six coils and have hunted mostly in Utah and Washington, but have also been in Idaho and Arizona. You'll have to experiment with different ones as time allows and decide what your preference is. My coils consist of the 5" and an 18" but I also have three of the SEF coils in different sizes. A lot of the time, I prefer to swing the original Pro coil that was included with it. You don't cover as much ground, but its a great coil.
