What's The Best Detector And Coil Combination For A Site That's Loaded With Iron?

Ive always heard those kind of places were best hunted with the multi-freaks...but recently theres been some discussion public and private about the great finds in the iron trash with the the AtPro...got a few myself., see those nails and glass in this scoop? is your place like this? That aluminum token hit high tone through this mess, but so does a silver dime or older penny...

ytcoinshooter, (Bruce) has the high end multi-freaks as well as the Pro, and hes knocking the stink out of good targets in the trash with the 5x8 dd..theres a slight little trick about how to use it in there though. ...you should see if JimTN will let you try his Pro?

All I can say with my limited experience is that I've hunted trash sites with the Pro and stock 11"dd, pulled silver, gold, sent my experienced buddies that have hunted for YEARS with multi's over there, and they dont find dink...so it sort of gives me a little confirmation that I aint missing much if anything...

Knowing you a little, your rabid and prolific hunting/retrieval skills, you should have no problem with the Pro...the screen is so small and hard to see you pretty much have to go by tones anyway! plus, it hits rings and chains like a freakin' train! Which I KNOW you like to find...just sayin' Tabby old pal..Bruce is a good guy and will give you the straight dope about how the Pro stacks up in the iron against the multi-freaks..you can pm him, I'm pretty sure he watches your finds, and as far as Jimmy, if you can pry that Pro out of his hand and give it a go, it may be what you are looking for....If I'm speaking out of school or through a lower bodily orifice, please forgive my inexperience....

Thanks for the advice Mud. I've never before experienced ground with high mineralization and bunches of iron nails and such. The driveways, road beds and a good part of the area around the old house has large river/pea gravel and a rusty looking sand down to around 7 inches or so, not the rich dark soil and clay that I usually detect in. It's really some super hard digging as well. I couldn't do it without my Lesche Dixie Shovel. I just keep rocking the handle back and forth until the blade reaches bottom and then pop the plug. I've been doing better using the smaller coils on my Tesoro detectors. I did OK with G2 with the 5 x 10 inch DD coil, but not as well the 11 inch DD coil. I've got a new 7 inch DD coil that I want to try on my Outlaw. Oh yeah, my Vaquero did well with the 5.75 inch concentric coil. At any rate I'm not used to bad soil, so any pointers are appreciated.

Put the 5 inch coil on your G-2 Tabman. If you don't have a 5 inch coil get on I-40 eastbound and I will loan you mine. That one for your T-2SE may work. HH

I will say this, in the trash iron, I have stood in one place for what seems to be a very long time and tried to just use the small center part of the 11" coil...it throws a footprint only as big as a golfball, almost like using a sniper coil, even with a bunch of other targets under and out on the fringes of the coil...but if a fellow takes his time and gently works between the iron in an area before taking another tiny baby step, it seems to work.

Take Jimmy out there with you and see if he can find anything good...or not...that guy could find a silver coin in a dumpster! Seems the modulated/proportional audio is good to have in these kind of spots to find good hits in the rust halo's..its frustrating and tone/target overload only allow me to concentrate for a few hours tops...not fun, or fast, or relaxing, but it sure does pull some good stuff where no other man dares to tread! I was looking at my notes...This damned old Pro got me 125gr of gold this year alone, and lots of silver, sure that one big chain was 75gr of it, but still... If I get down your way, I'll bring the Pro and you let me try out your Compadre, OK?. I'm not sitting around here all Winter if its gonna be like this!

Thanks for the offer, but I already have the 5 inch DD coil for both the G2 and T2SE. They do work well.

Mud the modulated audio is the ticket. I especially like it on my G2. If I get a real faint bouncy ID number that's at or above zinc, I'm digging.

I've had great luck using the Deeptech Vista Gold in a nail infested ghost town. They offer a small coil, which I don't have. I have a 11" oval coil. My invest in the small coil at a later dated, but for now, I'm doing well with the larger coil.

Garrett AT-Gold with 5x8" coil is a killer iron combo! Look at some of my post on the Garrett AT forum and see how I've been doing with this setup in old home sites. I've found more silver with this machine than any machine I've used in 20 yrs of detecting.

Deus and 9 inch coil for iron areas. If a small coil was offered like a 5 inch coil no other detector would be mentioned.

Agree with the above,either the deus or goldmax power with the 9inch will beat anything on an iron infested site.They were developed to winkle out tiny hammered and roman coins from highly iron contaminated sites and nothing can touch them for this kind of hunting.

I won't laugh. What our "good friend" does well, he does very well. And he does very well in heavy iron.
