Whatzit from Confederate Reunion Camp?

I went to a confederate reunion camp yesterday, and found this item at about 9 inches. Anyone have any idea what it is? Obviously the end would have been joined. Is is made of brass, and is about 4 inches long, half inch around. The edges are smooth and rounded. It seems like I have seen one, but can't remember what it is. Anyone got an idea?

i know exactly what it is, its a rope tensioner for tents.

That is a tent rope tensioner used on the the old canvas tents to tighten and hold the tension on the ropes. Those are cool.

I agree .... tent rope tensioner....they are still using similiar designed tensioners in new large tents..
