When Iron mask on..and you set the amount you want on the Se

does iron mask still function when you turn iron mask off and go to smartfind screen ?? Sorry to be so dumb, but heck,I am a newbie with the SE.

Please expalin to me how the iron mask works.

Hi Elton. With IM off, you are either in All Metal or in an advanced discrimination pattern in either conduct or ferrous. I like to hunt in ferrous mode, IM -30, smart screen which just knocks out the large iron. I like to listen to everything else and let my ears do the discrimination. There are about as many ways to set up the SE as there are users. I use about the same setup that Bryce does except I have to lower the gain one notch because of the trash I hunt in. When I hunt in extremely noisy ground, I have a pattern that is loaded and ready to go when I key IM off. It looks like a white T on the smart screen, accepting across the top and and a bar down the middle for accepting the gold rings, nickels, 3 cents and "fatty Indian cents.

Elton, This is a good question as the Iron Mask button sounds like some sort of magical special circuitry kicks in to mask out iron. It was a poor naming choice for this feature - it probably should have been called Quick Mask or Quick Pattern....it's just a quick way to set up a pattern by masking or blacking out the screen along the ferrous axis. The eTrac actually does this along both the ferrous and conductive axes! If you switch over to SmartFind - which is a custom pattern - the "pattern" that you have set up with IronMask will be disabled and the new one takes effect. The only good thing is that you can switch between a SmartFind pattern and an Iron Mask pattern with the touch of a button - that's all it is.....no magic circuit or anything fancy like it sounds. Poor choice of names on the software developer's part - they should have just let you set up two or more patterns and have the ability to cycle through them. It would be nice if you could move ANY pattern left and right and not just a rectangular "IronMask" pattern. Most experienced users just use some IronMask or open up the screen all the way - I myself prefer some IronMask.
