Which excalibur coil?

Hi. My Excalibur is approaching 7 years old and is starting to fall apart. I am considering buying a new Excalibur and was wondering if it was advantageous to get a 10 inch coil rather than an 8 inch which I have on my old machine? Does the 10 inch give much more depth?

Depth is a relevant term that depends on a lot of factor..... like iron, minerals, and even K of the gold. Air test or open ground YES its deeper.... in those conditions and heavy trash it may not be or may not separate as well as a larger coil. Smaller coils also tend to be more sensitive to smaller targets since you can normally run higher sensitivity. Which to get may also depend on how physically fit you are. Swinging the 10 inch in water ... especially with a lot of current you may need to man-up. The larger coil could also cause elbow problems or shoulder issues if you are out there a lot. What you will find is the ability to cover a lot more area since the 8".... isnt 8". On my beaches i prefer the 10" because we have very little mineralization and trash, the swells arent bad in the gulf, Competition is high so i prefer to cover move ground, and i can hunt 7 hours or more with it.

Thanks Dew. I appreciate the quick response and input. I use a straight shaft assembly on my Excalibur with a weight reducing device which makes the machine much more comfortable to use. I am locating targets as deep as 15 inches using (Ozzie 20 cent piece) with minimal sensitivity and minimal discrimination. I was just wondering if the 10 inch would give me even more depth.

In most situations.... yes. But 15 inches is outstanding for a small coil.... you may well have a hot machine. It seems some of the Xcals get hotter with age. I know a guy with one of the horse shoe style and that baby is HOT. My advice is if its blue.... keep it and have it repaired. That one year warranty goes fast on the new ones. Ive not been impressed with the newer Xcal IIs.... but once repaired ive not had another issue with that problem. Also.... used is half the price.... if you need repairs, even if it takes the price up to a new machine.... its as good as new when its returned and its been pressure tested if done in Ill. Kelleyco does have the ability to pressure test i dont think.

In your case..... 15 inches with that small coil is very good depth (which means it could the the target or machine). Going to either might not get you any more depth.... but a larger coild will get you more coverage since they dont tend to have a huge coil HALO.

You might also want to install a wot 15" . I have one on my excallibur 1.I am very successfull with it .I can find the smallest diamond stud ear ring with it ,so its pretty sensitve too.
 
Thanks for that. I met a guy on the beach a few months back who had one fitted and he said the same thing. It would be difficult to use in the water though? Do you use yours in the water?

Only calm water one can use the 15 inch efficiently, my opinion. I hunt the wetsand with the 15, 10 inch calm waters, bays, lakes,........... and 8 inch Atlantic ruff waters.

More advice, pull those knobs and check those O-rings also...If you decide to sell the machine let me know, always looking for older used machines that need a little help.
 
I assume you have more than 1 excel when you hunt with different coil sizes? Or have you managed to get waterproof connectors which allow you to change your coils?

Yes I have a few, the one I use the most is the little guy, except when I hunt the wetsand.

A big plus is I do repairs, only on the Excalibur and I have to take every single one out for a test spin. So I have several different types of setups I can experience, only problem is, my conditions are different then everyone else's.

Nothing on the changing of the coils yet, once I stop repairs this March I will have more time to piddle and come up with a solution that is better then what's out there now. More them likely it will be one that is worked into the endcap. Like my connector to replace the old iklite style, and allow one to use the same headphone on the Excal n CTX.
 
a connector like the Seahunter has to be able to use different coils? That would be great. BTW, the GG's you fixed for me are working great...many thanks, John
