Which Package Should I Choose?

I will be shortly getting a new CTX 3030 and have a choice of two packages.

Package 1 comes with the stock and the 17" coil

Package 2 comes with the stock and the 6" coil

I plan on doing canal pathways, fields both ploughed & pasture, parks / picnic areas and shallow rivers. Oh, the odd beach too.

Which package would be the most useful to me first, taking into account the above. I will eventually get all the coils sooner or
later when the money permits.

Big open area 17"

Trashy areas 6"

You will likely end up with all 3 sooner or later...... 17" is more $$$$ of course.

If its the same cost either way I would take the 17" just because its more money...

Slightly more cost wise on the 17" but still a big saving than buying it on it's own.

I was swaying towards the 6" only cos I wouldn't have to buy the harness and
could spend the money on better quality digging implements, as I've said I'll end up
with all the coils and accessories within a matter of months if not sooner.
So just wondering what's best to get started on.

I got my ctx in January with the 17 inch coil. I've used it on the beach and in a farm field than was the site of a small battle during the Civil War. The 17 inch coil is all I have used so far but I did just buy the 6 inch. The 17 will find case shot down to 14 inches in the field I hunt, but in a trashy area it will run you crazy with all the signals it picks up.
 
I have to agree with that comment WM10 used it for 1/2 hr junk in my book didn't and don't trust it all my computer gear has wires and so does my detecting gear , grab up 3 coils and let them keep the WM10.

Since most of the areas you list are open/wide fields, I'd go with the 17" first.

And since you say you're going to eventually get all three, it's then easier to save up later for the cheaper 6".

There is used CTX with the 17 and the 6 inch coil and it has a warranty til june of 2017. Check out : http://metaldetectingforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=51

don't mean to get off thread topic but what seems to be the problem with the WM10 module?? I've tried the 3030 plugging headphones directly to the CTX but I prefer using the WM10.


As stated before choose the 17" package and pick up a 6" down the line. I use them all, site specific.

I couldn't enjoy the CTX near as much if I had to plug my headphones into the detector. The WM-10 is SOOOOO nice to use. No more being tied to the machine every time I need to dig. If I want to stand up I can. If I want to walk over to my buddy, I can. Detector stays on the ground, headphones stay one my ears where I want them. So much easier.
 
I agree about the WM 10. With the 17 inch coil you will be digging some deep targets. After getting an 8 to 10 inch plug out of the ground I set the ctx down and get down in the hole with my pinpointer to complete the recovery. Not being tied to the detector is really nice.
 
different strokes for different folks I guess :biggrin: charged and used mine once spent more time fiddling with it than detecting my fault or not doesn't matter :biggrin: now resides at the bottom of my battery charger/s box I think anyway its around in there somewhere never to be used again :beers:

I love my 17 inch coil. Lately I have been using my stock coil again though since I have been hitting a lot of areas I had previously detected with the larger coil. The six inch is what I consider a specialty coil. I had one, found at least one large cent with it, but sold it to another forum member here that did detecting in areas that required the scalpel like accuracy you can get from it. Like someone else said. It sounds like you are going to be in wider open areas were the 17's capabilities can shine.
 
aj, by 'fiddling with it' do you mean trying to find a spot to put it on your gear or in your pockets? ime I just turn the WM on and go.
you might want to sell yours if youre never going to use it. turn a non performing assent into some other gear!

I've never been bothered by being tethered to my machine so long as the cord is long enough, but I do like the WM.
 
Minelab really dropped the ball with the WM 10 when you see what the XP guys (or White's for that matter) were able to do with sensible tech and wireless. Why is it necessary to carry another transistor radio/walkie talky/pre-flip phone sized accessory around with you to transmit a signal 4' . Do the weight specs on the CTX include that cumbersome albatross? Just more unnecessary gear , but detectorists seem to like that stuff with their harnesses and milspec vests and such. My WM10 hasn't seen the charger in a year after I had to send it to Minelab for repairs ,,,, just much simpler to plug in and go....waste of money , but selling a CTX without it requires finding a buyer who doesn't know that's it's really a bigger pita than it's worth
 
that's why I keep mine if I want to sell the thing meaning ctx and stuff.

and I don't like carting stuff wearing a tool belt with things hanging off might do it for some as mentioned above for me its just more crap I need to cart around, I will always trust a wire over air transmit 100% of the time is the other reason I plug in :biggrin:

but each to their own just sharing what I do :biggrin: doesn't mean I am right or wrong just means what works for me.

The Wm10 is the reason I can use my beloved sunray pro golds without having to re-buy the same more expensive model specific to the ctx with red caps. Plus if given the choice, I prefer not being tethered to the machine. The sunray probe seems antiquated with the cable too, compared to other wireless machines, but most would kill to have one mounted on a ctx. JJ

That's pretty much how I feel, as I use the DetectorPro Uniprobe pinpointer headphones.
Also, I keep the existing headphone jack cover off the CTX, and it's protector plug in place...so I can hunt in the rain (If I keep the WM10 in a (mostly) waterproof bag inside my rain jacket.)

HOWEVER...

I can also empathize with the 'fiddling with it' hassle expressed by some...I know what you mean. :)
One of my CTX/WM10 combos works perfectly, everytime...but my backup CTX/WM10 has, on multiple occasions, lost pairing and forced me to go through almost voodoo like gyrations to make it work before I can hunt.
The last time I went out with it, I had to fiddle with it for about 10 minutes before it finally 'took'. For a moment there...just before it paired...I was convinced I was going to have to call the hunt off.

So I can see both sides, and pretty much agree with both. :)
