Who's the resident sandbar detecting guru?

Took my son out yesterday after school (40 degrees) for a couple of hrs & searched a nearby sandbar.
Other than the shells my son collected it was a bust, unless fishing weights & beer cans count....lol
I had hoped with the water being low & more of the sandbar being exposed I'd found a little more....

When we were boaters (still am at heart), we beached the boat once on a sandbar (Peckerhead, Bare Azz Beach) to detect it. It was the first and last time. There was so many bottle caps and trash, we never went back.

It's good to hear that you did get out with your son though. That's a treasure in itself.

I've never hunted sandbars with a metal detector but gravel bars can be a good spot to find indian artifacts. Every state has different laws when it comes to picking up artifacts in their state owned waterways. Always best to know what the law is before hunting.

Im too hardheaded to give up on it yet.
My son "Ben" just turned 7 this Christmas & he loves metal detecting...
If we find any treasure or not it's time well spent outdoors w/ him.
Looking to replace my Ace 250 w/ an AT Pro or used E-Trac & giving the other to him.
He's already way ahead of some diggers, he replaces all of his plugs ; )

There was a piece of pottery found last year on a Sangamon river sandbar in a bend between Springfield and Petersburg. It was said to belong to a tribe that existed 700 years ago.
I guess you never know what you could stumble across.

haven't hunted any sand bars but i would think what would be available would always be changing with the action of the river. most of the luck i've heard others talk about on rivers is usually hunting the banks of the rivers. good luck.
