Why do some like the T2 better than the F75 for coin hunting?

jbow

I used an original F75 for a few years and for a couple of years it was my main machine. The T2 was my main for a year before that. I sold the F75, kept the T2 and bought an F75 LTD when it came out. I really like the LTD but I like the T2 also.

However I don't understand why anyone would prefer the T2 over the F75 for coin hunting since the F has an expanded upper range and the T has an expanded iron range. It seems that the F would naturally be preferred for higher TID targets like coins and the T would be preferred for iron or relics... though I find the F75 works just fine on relics once you learn it.

The 75 likes the iron..Rusty caps etc. and small pieces of nails rusted ?? what ever..The T2 can ignore them mostly by setting it to 40.and I don't really notice much if any depth loss.. with the T2...........Now I have never used the T2 LTD so I don't have a clue if iron Disc is still set up different that the 75 Series.. In my soil the T2 still stands as the best coin detector I have ever used.. And I have used a lot of detectors. a lot of depth stable operation etc..

Essentially, most find that the T[sup]2[/sup] works fine on coins once you learn it.

Personally, I don't care to use a lot of high discrimination because it can reject some of the more desired coin targets, and it also can knock out gold jewelry with too much rejection. Actually, about the most rejection I ever use is to silence common iron nails, and that's only when I am in a heavily infested site AND when I don't have any audio assistance in classifying common ferrous trash. If I am operating with simply a single tone audio, and I am frequently encountering nails, I increase the Discriminate level just enough to reject them. But if I have good audio classification then I accept them and listen to all targets. The T[sup]2[/sup] stays at '0' Discrimination and the Omega 8000 at the minimum of level '1', and I most often hunt with 2+ or d2 on those detectors, respectively.

I will state, however, that I haven't used the F-75 much at all. Far less than the T[sup]2[/sup], and even that isn't all that often compared with the Omega and other detectors this past year, and for what I am working most of the time right now, the Omega w/5" DD or maybe the 10" concentric coil is the first to be put to use. Just too much trash in the sites I am hunting right now, or tot-lots for quick change and jewelry.

Certainly, both of the Top-Dollar models from :fisher: and :teknetics: can get the job done.

Thanks for explaining it. I will try mine set at 40 and see how I like it. I like running in one tone and that sounds like it will work well that way. I'll try and see if I can see what disc number on the F75 LTD matches up with the T2's disc-40 and see if it performs the same. That will give me something fun to do!!

I checked my notes and I have the T2 reading foil/gum-wrapper between 40 and 55. Nickels usually read 57/58 on my T2. I'll have to check a cuff button, I think an eagle coat button reads just above a nickel... i'll try to check a few things this week to see what reads around 40 and just under and how it reads on the F75 LTD. I have a lot more numbers in my nites for the F75.The F manual says that foil/gum-wrapper reads between 16 and 25 so I assume a setting of 25 on the F75 would be about the same as a setting of 40 on the T2, but there is an 11 number range of foil/gum-wrapper on the F75 compared to a 15 number range on the T2 and you are setting at the top of that disc range... not much difference between the two, just a little but it may make a difference in setting them to match up in performance.

In my notes, targets that read under 25 on the F75 are: a metal crucifix (unknown metal); .22 short hull; triangular apothocary weight (I think) from a CW cavalry camp; square horse buckles; pocket knife( CW era) reads 24; flattened thimble also reads 24. Nickels read 28 to 31 but mostly 29 and 30...
I can try setting the disc on the T2 at 40 and the F75 at 25 and test them with the .22 short hull and the weight... and with some buttons... I just noticed that I only have one button in my F75 list of numbers. It is an early 1830s Navy cuff button I found on the Manning plantation site in Marietta. It reads 46 on the F75. I have a number of eagle cuff and coat buttons to check and i'll let you know what I get. All my minnies read between 51 and 65, according to thrir type and condition and where they were found. I realize we are talking about coin hunting but I reckon all the info is good to have.

So there is some comparison between the two. I'll try some side by side to see how I think they compare and let you know what I find. Thanks Elton for the explanation. This may well help me a LOT in using my F75 for coin hunting! Thank you!!!

I may sell a couple of machines and get an O-8000 and a G2. Do you know if the coils are will be compatable with the Omega-8000, G2, and T2? Thaty would really be nice.

I can see 2 or 3 on your list at the bottom of your post that I know I would part with. :) Actually, I can see just 2 on your list that I would hang onto (you have to guess, but I can tell you one has the number '2' in the name). The Omega is a very good detector. better than I had initially imagined, but I hadn't handled one early on and was basing some of my first thoughts on what I had heard from a couple of people on the forums.

Two dealer I know pestered me enough and said I just had to use one and give them my opinions. Well, once I decided to see what I thought of the Omega myself, I was a bit ticked (at ME) for not getting one into use long before! Absolutely a LOT of fun, and FUN is a very important ingredient to enjoying the sport and adds to the end success ratio. However, the merits of the Omega do not stop with the 'fun factor.' Indeed, it is a very versatile all-around detector. If you try to compare it with similar-featured models from the competition, which would probably be the Minelab X-Terra 70/705 or the White's MXT, the Omega shows itself quite well. Can't be beat for the dollar value, the light-weight and excellent balance and 'feel,' and multi-purpose performance and the features it provides.

None of us really know how well the G2 or new Fisher Gold Bug are going to do in a variety of hunting applications, but odds are it will do well. mainly targeted for the electronic prospector in search of gold nuggets, I think it will do a good job for a lot of serious relic hunting uses as well. I am hoping to find that out when I take one to three or four old sites that have produced a lot of smaller-sized 'keepers" for me. One has surrendered my first Seated Liberty Half-Dime, my only Capped Bust Half-Dime, more Half-Dimes overall (about 4X all other sites combined), a 3

Thanks Monte...

at this time I would not part with the F75 LTD; T2; E-TRAC, or SovereignGT. The resaon I keep the GT is because I like it so much when I go to the Florida panhandle beaches... I chestmount it and it works like a charm. The SE and The V3 have been very frustrating and believe me I have gone over and beyond trying to become comfortable with them. I should have sold the SE long ago. The Tejon is useful at certain old farmhouse sites but the G2/Omega may render is obselete... to me. :Also, I find that the T2 works very well on a salt beach as long as I stay out of the water which I usually do... but the GT also has some sentimental value to me...

Thanks for your help.

Which is the other one that you would keep?

I think I can understand that, knowing your comments elsewhere about the Sovereign for the beaches. That said, I am not an E-trac fan.

I'm not sure Minelab states the coil is oil-proof.

I can understand your frustrations with the Spectra V3. I owned a couple of 'Vs' early on, dealt with the headphone issues and a flock of other quirks that i encountered, and basically determined that FOR ME and MY HUNTING NEEDS, the V was at it's best when I used the 6

Thanks Monte. wewill have to agree to disagree about the SE/ET. For me the ET is WAY better than the SE. I am a big fan of the CO number on the ET, it don't lie. I am really starting to enjoy the F75 LTD too. You said a mouthfull when you said this,

"By "successful" I am not only referring to the quantity and/or quality of finds made, but the pleasure of the time spent afield".

The V3 has a beguiling interface with all the colors and screens but dand if I can find anything with it. I am thinking that maybe I tinkered a little too much with it. I think I am going to restore all the programs to stock. One thing I have done that I think has hurt me is to change to "tone id". I think I am going to switch back to either one tone or "shifted tone". All I am getting is jumping numbers and tones everytime I use it. I think I am going to lower the sensitivity a little too but I am concerned that I will just have a more stable machine for detecting shallow targets if I do. It gives me back spasms too... but I cannot stand to think that I am not able to learn to use it right. I went through the same thing with the SE for about a year... I used it several times a week... was totally frustrated... I would hunt with it for about an hour, find nothing, get out my F75 and immediately begin to make good finds. It is the same thing for me with the V3. Everytime I use it I am frustrated and make few finds. With the SE I finally bagan to "get it" when I switched from using disc programs, conductive sounds and multitones to using AM and ferrous sounds... then I gegan to make some finds and began to understand what it was telling me. The ET was like an old friend right out of the box. I set it in auto+3, deep=on; fast=on; pitch hold; ferrous sounds; two tones and didn't try to make it be an Explorer. I just relied on the CO number as long as the FE number wasn't too high and began to make good finds in some really hard hunted sites. If you haven't tried it like that do so if you get a chance. The tones are similar to the T2/F75 in 2F or 2+ with a low tone for iron and a higher tone for everything else. Look for and D/L "Jason's Relic Pattern" from over a year ago. It is just an enlarged relic pattern. I mostly run like that but sometimes I run either that pattern or quickmask with 27 FE and higher blanked and 01-02 CO from 27-50 blanked and 41/42/43 CO disced back in. When I run that way I use conductive/multi and it helps to stop the iron falsing sometimes I also blank CO 49 and 50.... but still if you get another chance just try the relic pattern and ferrous/2-tones and rely on the CO number. I think you'll like it better except for the ergonomics... they are what they are. I get around that by tweaking the shaft length often, just a half inch shorter or longer makes a world of difference if it starts to bother me.
I will be selling and buying soon and will probably be trying an O-8000 and a G2. I just have a hard time letting things go... but something has to give soon.

Thanks for listening... I know that not everything in this post belongs on this forum so please forgive me for straying., going to upgrade to the i then if it doesn't please me I am going to sell it.

Going outside now to see if I can simplify the V3 a little.

Oh yeah... one reason I like the F75 LTD a little better than the T2 is because in BP I can swing slower and get a good hit. The T2 LTD may be the same in BP and I don't know but i've heard that you only have the option of 2 tones in BP with the T2 LTD, I assume you also have 1 tone.

funny thing is they said this about the f-75 standard as well!..what happened to it?
still a great detector,or not?
