Why do you like to MD?

This may seem like a simple question but with everyone of us here being unique and having different circumstances in life the answers will be varied but at some point will mesh into a common denominator.

My wife left me 2.5 years ago and she took my 5 year old son who I dearly loved. When I was married I was continually looking at/fantasizing about getting a White's MD but near the end I caught a glimpse of ML's ad with 28 frequencies approach and it made more sense to me so I bought the SE around 11/06. I fiddled with it some but I didn't really apply myself until July of this year. I had initially let frustration/life's problems obstruct the real beauty of MD in trying to learn the SE.

MD appeals to me for several reasons.

1) I am a loner by nature. The song, "Here I Go Again" by Whitesnake fits me perfectly. So in my pursuit of swinging I go alone. It's all me. So it's my own world.

2) I like the thought of finding something that is hidden and nurturing the skills to find those hidden objects. The nuances of running the plug over the coil and whee, hearing the sound we all love knowing that there is something in that plug, what could it be?

We all here can share the same experience when people look at us like,"What in the hey is this person doing"

We hear the same questions, "Find any treasure" "Find any gold?" "What are you doing"

a couple days ago I got a signal and I was recovering a wheatie and a woman walks by and says with an inquisitive look,'What are you doing?" I said,"I am metal detecting" I said .
I got a wheatie" I could tell by her face that she didn't know what I meant so I showed her. I put the reverse side to her face and I said,"See the wheat on the sides" That's why it's called a wheatie.

I asked her if she could see the date. She said no, laughing as it was in pretty rough shape. She wore glasses so I hoped she could help me. I have to buy a loupe sometime soon.

I talked to a couple child and I had one swing the SE and she was fascinated. I showed how it sounded when it hit a coin.

I petted a few dogs. I love animals, especially dogs. One women who came out with sticks in her knapsack out of the woods trail around the park had a dog and it started coming toward me and she started calling her dog as it got near me and it wouldn't listen to her as I was calling the dog too so in resignation she laughed. I had to put my dog down 6 years ago and it was horrible and I miss that dog every day so animals can sense my love for them and they can pick up on me better than a human can.

That's actually probably another reason I like to MD is promoting the sport and telling people info on MD and what it entails. I already made out some business cards. I should print them out because many people have questions and they have no direction as to what to get or what to expect when entering into this unique hobby. They drive away or leave and then I say to myself, I should given them a card so they could email me if they had any further questions.

Believe it or not I have had many women approach me while MD. It is a conversation stimulant and it is non threatening. You're not in a bar and you do not have to deal with the screwed up pressurized dynamics of the pickup or one night stand shields they put up and so everyone is relaxed.

Have also ever noticed that if you've been MD all day or days of MD that you could swear you hear a probe going off or a coin signal? I noticed this same type of immersion for me when I used to hunt a lot. I would hear bird sounds, bluejays, etc.

Well, I have rambled on enough. I would appreciate your confessions on why you like MD so feel free to post because I am going to read every one and probably comment on it.

When I was a youngster we would rummage through the town dump, and we would find good stuff. And so, finding things still gets me excited.

Many people throw good stuff out and you can score pretty well in a dump or you can do the modern equivalent of dumpster diving. One man's junk is another man's treasure as they say.

great story there king: here's another 'partial' loner.can't say much about the why and where i love the hobby though--too slow at typing--one finger is'nt fast enough--i suppose the best reasons are quiet places, and i just love finding lost things--especially money..hh:jump::minelab:

Solitude is mentioned many times and I know others have mentioned this when escaping life's pressures or a trial they are going through. Finding money is one I think we ALL like. :spin:

think you answered the question you asked for most of us. Finding time to be alone, finding history, that for me a lot of times I am the only one who cares, until I find something, than they get wide-eyed.

I have always been a digger and finder and always searching for the lost or hidden things....But I think it wasn't until I bought a Minelab and figured out that this machine is more than any other machine out there.....I could find more with it cause it has got what it takes in todays world of Been there Found that!....I got discouraged with not finding anything old, until I bought the Minelab Detector and found my first 1743 silver 2 reale, thats when I found out it was possible. I got discouraged fast with my Radio Shack....and my bud used a whites and found old coins...so I had to find a better machine to use....and I had read and read till I fell asleep....I had the $ at the time so I decided to go with what I read and believed in was the best decision to make....I guess I won in my decision..Now I can hunt where he cannot and I find coins that he does not hear......now I go to bed dreaming of hunts to come...it keeps me moving forward...cause the rest of this crappy world around me is not what I call going very good...so I like to get out and escape it for awhile...Thanks MINELAB!
Oh and it puts me in my favorite places....The woods, the beach, and in the water....(with the Minelab Excaliber)....always loved Nature and peace and quiet!

Mattockman,
I never regretted buying my ML either. I didn't realize it until now that I bought the best MD you could get and it truly gets what others can not see.

It's funny that you mentioned they get wide eyed. Everyone thinks you're a kook until you find an old coin or some gold, heehee. I remember when I found my first silver, a 58 franklin half and I wanted to shout to the world. I even went out afterwards for a break from MD and brought it with me and showed an older waitress at a breakfast place. She mentioned that her husband bought a mD but he never used it.

I just about everyday at work have 1 or 2 converations over detecting. Sites, finds, history, people wanting to buy my stuff etc. Its never ending, I love it. Last week I had an offer to buy a little silver dollar sized stone cup used to put on face paint. An "archy" looked at it and felt it was 10,000 years old. I picked it up in a ditch in plain sight 5 foot from a highway. I was out detecting and spotted it.

archy? At first I was like what is he talking about and then I connected the dots. Sell it to him for $10,000,heehee. Another thing I noticed is that your visual acuity is heightened on stuff that is on the ground as you are walking when you get immersed in MD.

Ever since I was a kid, I liked anything old. I loved going with my father to flee markets. The old kind where people bring their junk, not the new kind these days where people sell new Chinese crap. Those were the days.

When I lived in Germany while stationed there with the Air Force, I first got into MD when a friend took me out to some battlefields. Being a military history buff, I was in heaven. We never found anything more than shrapnel, ammo and some dangerous UXOs laying around, but I was out having fun with friends.

I just recently got back into MD earlier this year and I can honestly say, I really hope to never get tired of it. I've always loved Dirt Bike riding/racing, but I always knew I my body couldn't do it forever and since my brothers kind of stopped riding, it wasn't fun anymore.

About the only thing I really wish is that my wife would enjoy it. As much as we love the heck out of each other, we've never liked each others hobbies. Maybe that's a good thing and keeps us going. She lets me get out as much as I want and I can't ask for much more. It's especially nice after a long day of MDing and coming home to a great meal. :cheekkiss:

The thrill of seeing what the ground holds always keeps me going. Once I get going, I always have a hard time packing it away. How many of us almost hate having the back light option on the Explorer? So many times, I've had to turn it one cause I ain't leaving till I get one more good signal.

It's funny watching the reactions of people watching me at parks. The usual question is, "looking for gold"? Yesterday, we had a wacked out guy talking to himself and getting pretty animated as if he were talking to someone right next to him. He was a young guy and only looked to be mid 20s maybe. It's a small park and everyone kept an eye on him, but he pretty much kept to himself and kept his distance from everyone. Every once in a while, he'd yell out at someone and I always made sure my back wasn't toward him. The scary thing was when I'd loose track of him after recovering a target.

I started detecting a few years ago at the suggestion of my M.D. I lost 3 family members in less than 3 months and had a lot of extra time on my hands, too much time to think. I was numb with loss and didn't know what to do. I bought a cheap machine and started out slow, going to parks and schools. I was surprised at the stuff people lost. Then I met a guy that invited me to a MD club meeting. I went and the stuff the members were finding amazed me. I upgraded to an SE almost two years ago. The best finds I have made have been the friends I've made. Some of the things we have found are incredible. I'm hooked and hope to be doing this with my grand kids someday. The research is almost as much fun as the recovery.

I hear what you are saying there Weasel. Just think some MD do NOT have a backlight.

Sorry to hear about your losses. Must have been a very rough time. So it was a healer to you in your ordeals. It pulled you through too. You got your SE around the same time I did.

U just got an 88 V nickel and you're angry? :beers: :buds: :puke:

Hey KG,

I started detecting when I was 10 or so. Pretty much quit through my 20 and 30s and then took it up again.

Lots of fun and really enjoy the history aspect of it.

The 88 V came from a site with poor soil, barely discernable date. Didn't realize it was a semi-key.

Couple inches of snow already tonight and cold weather on the way so I think the year is done. A couple years we've had a December thaw, maybe this year?

That would be nice, a thaw in the 50's.

I so agree with the friends met in this detecting hobby....I too have lost many family members and a close detecting buddy in the last 6 years. To meet up with people and feel like family the first day is what the hobby does to folks. Hunting with NHBob and his friends has made me look forward to another day....I've learned, laughed, shared and worry about them from time to time when their health is down....it's all good!
