Why do you like to MD?

Well I did begin prospecting and loved it.. And so naturally I wanted to try MD'ing...
It can be sort of a therapy for me and a great chance to calm down.
"Work for the soul" I can completely shut of my brain and just exist, not think, figure or anything else.

I've always liked to "find things". As a kid, I began looking for arrowheads and spent years collecting them. I wouldn't take one if you gave it to me because the thrill is in the "find". Metal detecting was right up my alley. I began 25+ years ago searching almost exclusively for Civil War relics. Now I hunt mostly for coins with an occasional relic hunt. I guess what tells it best is a hunt I had a couple of weeks ago. I was driving down a very country road here in MS and spotted the foundation and front steps of what I thought might be an old school. I stopped a man driving down the road and asked if he new who the property owner was and he directed me to a nearby house. I spoke to the owner and told him what I'd like to do and he gave me permission. Then he began to tell me the story of the house that once stood there. Seems that the house was built in the late 1920's by a prominent farm family. Then the depression hit and they apparently were losing everything they owned. The farmer lost it and set fire to the house with everything they owned inside and sat on the front porch while it burned. Fortunately some people came by and pulled him off the porch before the fire got him. He was never right after that and according to the owner, spent the rest of his life in a mental hospital.

Detecting the house, I went inside the foundation walls to fight the old rusted iron a little while. I found numerous pitchers, plates and other pieces that were once silver plated. I also found several small brass picture frames that once probably held family photos. Holding these items and thinking about the people that once owned them and what became of them seemed to convey their whole lives to me. This is why I love this hobby. Every coin, every ring and every relic were once part of someone's life. It's a special thing to bring these lost items back to life again.

There is a special connection there when you are holding something in your hands that someone held in there and they are long dead by now. It shows you that life can pass you by really quick.

I am an explorer by nature. I am interested in all things I can't easily see with my senses, or are difficult to discover ... fish or objects under water (fishing and scuba), animals or plants in the woods (hunting/gathering), furbearers in the marsh (trapping), distant objects in the sky (astronomy), history, my own physical and mental limits, etc. Is there a word for the exact opposite of a sight-seer, maybe it is explorer, because that is what I am. I like to explore everything. It took me a while to find metal detecting as a hobby but it only makes sense for me because it fits in with all my other interests. It is my favorite hobby now.

You're basically a loner I think and you're very much in touch with yourself and your spirituality so MD fits you perfectly. I am just saying this as an observation. I could be wrong. I am a loner too and am interested in the same things as you so we're probably have the same thread running through us even though we are different people.
