WHY PUT '40' ON THE SCREEN?

Does anyone know why Minelab went up to 40 on the lcd screens if all that it is is rusty iron? I always thought it odd that 39 will either be a quarter or silver jewellery of some description and then one more number(40) will just be iron? Maybe there is no answer to this but I would have thought the iron would have registered in a - minus number i.e. -10 to -1 It's no problem to block this off the screen but why have it at all on the screen from the get go??????? Just wondering!

Well like I said my half was jumping and was up to 40.Also another member said he finds large rings at 40 and posted them I never have but I dig 40s and have had some odd finds just my thoughts.But I do have to say I have found a lot of junk at 40 but I dig it anyway.

I still dig 40, hoping they turn up as silver, but they remain thin pieces of sheet metal.

The 705 has 48 which was explained as a wrap around number.(Ferrious Halo). It was nulled out. Some of the machines Im reading about sound like they need to be re calrabrated as they're air testing silver dollars at 34 and all documentation states it should be at 38, 39. I have had to have 2 MDs sent back because they ID coins incorrectly but not ML's. I beleive the 40 is the same as with the 48 on the 705. IMHO

I hope Andy picks up on this issue because I've almost always rejected it out but horrified at the same time thinking I may have missed some silver! All the targets I've dug up at 40 have been rusted iron or junk metal. Maybe a bent silver coin will register sometimes at 40??????...this is an issue that we should discuss further.[/size][/size]

I always notch out 40 and figure that if a silver would creep into 40, it will also hit at 39.

My thoughts are if in a real old place where targets are few and far between just might be a real old silver half or dollar or perhaps a large cent where the copper has leached into the ground not a relic hunter but just could be that old buckle thats worth big bucks also...Generally most would disreguard but those that investigate get the goodies...sort of darned if you do and darned if you don't kind of thing...and your call.....For those familiar with a Whites XLT same as a #95 VDI......

I'm not a 'techi' but I'll keep the comment in mind that Clad2Hunt made about 40 being "wrap around number" All the observations that everyone posted seem to be legit comments but I always thought that 38 to 39 is a clad quarter and a 39 for sure as either a clad quarter or a 90% silver quarter or silver jewellery etc; and then we have the next number 40 as...............well some different ideas to what that indicates but almost certainly JUNK whether it be iron rusted or not!. Logic tells me that the 40 should be a -11 on a Safari at least but maybe there is not one solid answer to wrap this issue up for good! It's great to bring these issues up though because we are all on a learning curve! Thanks again.[/size]

Found a 1900 barber half in grandpa's yard at 6 inches.It came up 40 on screen.I don't notch it out.You never know.It's the only half I have ever found but I hope there's more.Lots of times 40 gets me a big chunk of junk.But after that half I always dig 40's.

I posted this before and most seem to agree that strangely enough silver halves and silver dollars come in at the 34-36 range like a penny. Why this is is a mystery and a pain in the neck cause I don't like digging pennies. It would be wonderful if they came in at 40 then you would know...but I have tried tons of them and they never come in at 40. I wish we coulod make some sense of this...it is really too bad for the safari. The only consolation is the SOUND may be different. If you get a HIGH sounding 34 35 36...dig it it could be a silver dollar or half. (That doesn't mean a 40 couldn't be silver but it seems to be extremely rare.)

Got a 39 from one angle and 40 from the other at 8 inches or so...Out came a 65 quarter which I understand is a little different than 66 on ..is mettalic wise....so the 40 you let go just might be big silver...those that investigate find the goodies and usually rusty 40 target covers more area so your call...

Try putting in all metal with nothing under coil before noisy canceling . I noticed it helps with the ID concern. Ground matrix on these machine is every thing and can cause them to ID wrong if not balanced correctly. It is working for me. Hope this helps. JR

[size=medium]Well, I think the jury is still out for many of us on why Minelab left the #40 on the screen! I love the forums because we all learn so much from other detectorists Thanks to everyone that posted comments.
Although I believe as some do that silver does occasionally bounce between 39 and 40, I also think that like psyvad stated that if it is silver, it will register 39 and maybe you'll also get a 40 signal too. That has been my experience.
I think I'll do what Andy Sabisch advises and notch out the 40. I trust his 45+ years of experience.[/size]
