With the gold stock price I'm changing my hunting priority and strategy

My goal today gold ring. The Sovereign was set on discrimination just below a nickle.I would like to dig 1000 pull tabs before the season ends and see how many rings if any would fall into a 1000-1 ratio for rings.I have a long ways off 940 to go after to days search.

XT,I searched in an open field at the park not so much trash, but closer detecting to the main picnic area will net more pull tabs. When I first started detecting I recovered hundreds of rings.Better equipment has almost dried my good gold finds up.With current gold prices its worth the extra work. These cleaned out parks have been cherry picked for silver and my hypothesis most gold is still in the parks.

You better hurry RON, old man winter is getting close and you know what that mean's! Yea picking's are getting slim every where
need to rethink the game plan in order to keep up the intrest. Have you gave scouting out / hunting the woods a try? Some people
have done well there but I gess it all depends on your local. Think outside the box a little, like weekend road trips maybe. Google with
maps of your area, overnight trips within 100 mi., you never know what you could turn up till you give it a shot. I think it would be eazyer
on us if Gold was worthless instead of +$ 1200 a oz. ! Keep thinking!

XT,yea winter is coming. It gets real cold outside and in the barn at a horse farm, next week we will have ice in water buckets.I take a metal detector with me on short trips and always looking for better places to hunt.We all have good and bad seasons.Gold is where the opportunity is to make money in this hobby, and ring hunting for most has been a low priority because of the extra work.My point re hunt your favorite park with an effort to dig more trash and find that gold missed or left behind.

I haven't dug much gold but it would mostly be nulled out at that setting. I need to get out and try to find some. I've always hunted either relics or old coins. I need to study up on the sort of places where gold is found, inland.

Good luck!

J

Naaaa, he should recover roughly half of all gold rings with the discrimination set just below nickle. They are pretty evenly spread from about 75 to 169 or so. Some read all the way to 180 but are more rare in the 173 to 180 range....spread a little thin in those numbers compared to everything below 169.

I'm sure there are a ton of gold rings out there in parks waiting to be found. Usually the guys with real gold ring fever go straight for the beach because it's so much easier to scoop than dig. I think the key in finding rings on land is zoning in on hot spots (open areas of the park for frisbee and other sports, around waiding pools, swings, etc. I've also been thinking about hitting along the bike trails and such, as with all the bikers and hikers I'm sure plenty of gold rings slide off fingers when sweating and also when your hands are moving up and down running.

I have found ALL of my rings behind goalposts. Having played soccer myself, and knowing it is not within the rules to play with jewelry, that's where many rings will be. I have witnessed people launching their coat/sweatshirt/etc behind the goal (with their jewelry) in order to get into the game. Hope you all find gold soon.

Also, look at it this way- By digging all the junk on land gold ring hunting you're also apt to unmask some old coins too. It's going to happen sooner or later if you are digging all those lower conductive targets out of a park.

I always look to the old coin potential in old parks with optimism. I have a friend who likes to grumble about everything being worked out. While he's sitting around doing that my other friend and I are making some great finds. I look at it this way- There are millions of "iffy" coin signals out there waiting to be dug, and they will continue to exist for many years to come. If people go into parks looking for perfect classic silver IDs then that's when they get skunked. On the other hand, if they've got the deepest machine on the planet (Sovereign) they can probably also expect deep/clean coin signals as well. I never think negative in terms of places being worked out. I just think about finding deeper coins or ones masked in certain ways. So long as you use that mindset and hunt with a Sovereign all old places are new again to me.

Critterhunter,in about a 3 year period when I was stationed at KAFB in Albuquerque NM my gold ring finds were in the hundreds using old TR detectors. My point, most detector user's notch nickles and look for silver.Back then it was a lot of work and with today's modern detectors still require a lot of work shifting through tabs and other trash.

I am a relative newbie, but I hunt with zero discrimination, dig all potential gold signals, don't mind digging clad, and have several rings to show for it.

Hi Ron

A couple of years ago, I dug a platinum and gold riing with a 2.08 kt diamond which read within the zinc pennie range. It was a big ring, but I guess the platinum made it less than 180. This paid for my gt many times even though it had already paid for itself. I think the gold goes all through the range.

Smokey,I have always hunted in zero discriminate and notch until now.I'm setting just below nickle and dig everything regardless which will include a ton of pull tabs.I have had averages a silver coin or two on every time out but now gold is a priority.Need to see for myself what the ratio of pull tabs are for a ring.Gold Fever!!!

Wow, really nice ring!

I think I misunderstood you then...If you are saying that what you meant was that you dug a lot more gold rings when machines didn't have the ability to discern targets to avoid when coin hunting? If that's what you meant then I completely agree.

Critterhunter the early machines forced me to sort through pull tabs and as a result produced a lot of good gold.I'm still interested in the ratio to gold with pull tabs.I hope to get out more, but need to get things nailed down on the farm.

Thanks guys. That was an awesome day when I found that ring. I also belive it would be worth it to dig the tons pulltabs at older parks. hh-Mark

This might be off the Sovereign subject a little bit, but could be good for hunting rings. A good friends brother used to hunt with a Tesoro in the 80's, I think. Years ago, he told me that his machine let him know when he had a ring under the coil, and he had a bunch of rings, according to my friend. I know it's not a gt, but might be worth getting that model just for rings. It couldn't be that expensive now, if you could fiind one in good shape. I'm going to get in touch with him and see what he had. That may be an easy way to go through a lot of pull tabs. hh-Mark

Mainly the ability to "tell" if it's a gold ring versus say a tab is based on audio response. If you get real good at hearing what the machine is saying then that will improve your odds at identifying gold. Luckily the GT's outstanding audio details provide the best subtle telling traits between gold and tabs or other junk than any machine I've owned. Even if they both have the same ID the gold ring often will sound smoother, warmer, round, softer, etc, where as trash can sound harsh, tinny, bouncy, bangy, rough, washed out, etc.

Not all machines have this ability to provide these small differences in audio. Some are better than others. The MXT or M6 for instance are very good at this, though not as good (not as many tones and other things, not to mention not getting nearly the depth of a Sovereign) as the Sovereign. The main thing is to use a machine that has very telling audio and then to learn what it is saying. A friend of a friend uses an MXT and he has learned it's language on rings very well from what I hear. He always seems to be finding gold rings on land, as that's his primary target when he hunts.
