Hi islandchips
The Pocket UniProbe is a fantastic little unit. The Pocket probe is different in that it does NOT have a separate headphones. It does have it's own external speaker (which can be a bit hard to hear if you choose to pinpoint with it while you keep your headphones over your ears) or you can plug in an ear peace(ear buds) to 1 ear while still wearing your earphones.
It is in effect a mini pulse induction detector that you can wear on your belt and has the ability to hit a coin at 5inches. I did this on my first time out with it! It was a smaller coin as well which impressed me all the more. In an air test before I took it out, I couldn't get more than 3inches. When pinpointing with it, on shallow targets it gives off a fairly high energy squeal and as the target is deeper in the ground, the sound changes to a lower energy sound that as it reaches it's maximum depth sounds more like a slow rasberry.
This also helps in telling you how far the target is in the ground.
I've only had it for about 4 weeks now, but something else I have noticed with it, is that when the detector gives you a good signal and you pinpoint with the probe, is when the detector tells you that it is a shallow target and the probe gives you a lazy signal(that it is deeper than the detector is telling you) then it is junk.
I can't buy this unit here in Australia, So I bought it off David Heath of Dixie Detectors(see his add on this site) for $269 U.S. plus freight. Some people charge $299 for this unit.
Although it is an expensive unit, it has the ability to be used with ANY detector and it has a better reach than the Sun-Ray unit. This probe has removed my greatest frustration from this hobby, that of actually probing the target, and taking into account the time you can waist looking for the target or worse still, giving up in frustration, I believe that my find rate will improve by about 30%! I can't recommend them highly enough!
Hope this is helps.
Mick Evans.
