Would You Have Dug It?

Yes, you would have. And boy did it sound sweet too. I was hunting in a spot where I've dug a number of nice coins, including a nice 1939 Walking Liberty half at 7 inches. So when I heard and saw this, I was sure I was going to be posting something nice here today. Alas, it turned out to be the crushed down and perfectly round quarter-sized head of an antique tube of toothpaste or something similar. It was about 8 to 10 inches down.

Better luck next time...

some where I read once on here that you would never see 29 cond. on a coin. Is that true? I think it was the expl. xs they were refering to but should be same for the II. I have never seen 29 ever.

No, that's not true at all. Quarters come up 29 a lot. I've seen many. Here's a list that Digger posted a while back. Everything I've checked against it is right on.

Sure, I would have dug that. Like you wrote, quarters come up like that all the time...

Thanks for the list by the way; didn't have some of those.

Max on the beach forum had a ring come up at 15-01; no marks. Curious as to what that could be.

Yeah, I saw Max's ring and at first thought it might be Titanium. I found a Titamium ring that looked very much like his last year with my Elite. It was stamped "Titanium" inside, as you would expect any ring to be. I tested it on the Explorer II and it came up as 10-06. So I think Max's may be Stainless Steel. I'm not sure how Platinum comes up but if it were gold or platinum I would expect a marking.

Did you or anyone else do a chart like that for the Quattro? I started to do one, but never finished it. It wasn't tracking exactly with manual or Andy's book. I did get to where I could tell which style of pull tab I was digging, hoping all along it was a engagement ring! (and plan to continue doing so)

I dont use digital, and that location on the smart screen would make me suspicious of it not being a coin.. generally that far right and not off the top more is not a coin.. Quarters and large cents read higher up.. dimes read a bit more left nd a bit higher, dollars and halfs read a bit lower than that... But that would be one you had to dig thats for sure, as you never know, and its definately not iron :) and yeah I have gotten quitw a few of those old rolled up metal tooth paste tubes, especially at sites that date from the 40's and 50's.. Biys scout camps are loaded with them

This machine, it goes soooo deep. I'm afraid I wouldn't get one that works as well. So I usually use the crosshairs, but it sounds like you can discriminate better with the numbers.

I did that...it didn't. It sure SEEMED like a coin. I've dug enough deep coins with it that I was sure it was. Got fooled. But 'tis better to have dug and lost than to never have known, right?

Well, I DO like having the numbers. And it does help some in determining the bad from the good. Much of the time, but not all. And those who swear by the Smartfind have little use for the Digital. Me, I like having both and switching back and forth for now. Eventually I will probably settle on one as a preference but I'm a little too anal to go with one and ignore the other. :)

Hey Mike!I would!
I noticed you too use high sensitivity. I Just got mine about four months ago.
I was a White user for the longest while. I'm use to a solid treshold but with the EXP2 I can not keep a treshold no matter what sensitivity I set it up.
When I raise the coil it comes back.
Is this normal. I set mine as high as I can without going nuts on me.
I could never have a straight answer.

No, it's not normal. Of course the threshold will come and go from time to time. But if you are constantly losing the threshold than you have to either slow your sweep, lower your sensitivity, open up your discrimination, or (and my vote) a sensible combination of all the above. Yes, I run my sens high, but only at sites where I can. As it turns out, that was one of them. But it's usually more like 22 to 24.

And the other thing I do is run in IM -16. If you do that, you will be able to run the sens higher and still have a very maintainable threshold. I'm not sure how you set up your machine. If you have iron being masked then your machine will null when you go over it. Which is why I turn Iron Mask ON, so that I can turn it all the way down to -16, which is OFF. Which is not to be confused with Iron Mask OFF, which is really ON if you are running any discrimination pattern. So with IM on and set to -16, you hear everything. And if nothing nulls the machine, the threshold is only interrupted by actual signal and it's easier to hunt continuously that way and to sort the good targets from the bad better. It's a little less "serene" inside those headphones that way. But what would you rather have, SERENITY or SILVER? :)

Check this link here out and particularly the "Charles Rock Solid Setup" to see how I've been hunting lately. I wasn't thinking I would like it very well but I tried it and I do.

I am the exact opposite. I have never used the smartfind screen. I only use the digital read out. I mostly blame that on myself. I do alright with my finds so I am sticking to it now. Just think it is interesting how I became an outsider(not the normal) so to speak.hh
