Seems First Texas is making some great machines lately with help from the new enginner Dave Johnson. He has designed most the gold nugget machines in America. Bounty Hunter came in first place and Fisher came in second with wide margine way ahead of everyone else. Mostly those teams were using the T2 and the F75. Garrett was dead last I hate to say with a huge gap between first place. Oh well, Whites didnt fair much better as they were right behind Garrett in second to last.

I still like the GTI 2500 over those machines but I know the electronics are top notch and they only use 4 AA batts. I think they arent as tough as Garrett but they can perform well....I thought maybe Whites would do better with there new machine out there now...but hard to tell. Isnt just the machine its has alot to do with the operator. Hope to see a new Garrett out soon to compete with these new low voltage in - high voltage out machines. Not sure why Garrett comes in dead last every year. Maybe because half the team uses a discriminating detectors and will miss stuff that a hot new T2/F75 will hit. I know that Garretts disc mode arent depth monsters thats for sure like the newer disc mode of First Texas machines. Time will tell when we see what Garrett has to unveil.

Alan..

I agree it's time for Garrett to play catch up ! I bought a fisher F5 to add to my detectors. Here's a mid price detector that can hit dimes and pennies at 8-9 inches and quarters at 10-11 inches and that's no B.S. I love Garrett detectors and have found many great treasures with them but could no longer wait for a new top of the line detector to come out. But with that being said I bet when they do come out with a new one it will be one great detector and for sure on my list of must have things!

Alan.
Would you be game enough to post it on the Garrett Treasure Hunting page, you know where.
It might create enough interest to start a likewise event there.
Never mind about minor details like winning or not winning, it's all about participation, without it the event would not take place.

It can't be true. With respect to performance we cannot be beaten by bounty hunters. It makes sense if going by price since they are the cheapest out there.

Wow, I'll run to TOYS R US and get a bounty hunter right now. (NOT!!!!!!)

The Bounty Hunters they won with arent the cheap ones you see every where...they are the Bounty Hunter T2 detector. its the same as the FISHER F75. Bounty Hunter owns Fisher so they work together on there high end stuff along with Tecnetics.

I am sorry but i do not believe in this. Every year the results are the same . It is not the metal detector that is so good it is the user!!!!

Were you there? Which team were you on? Which detector did you use? Since its a relic hunt, I hope the Garrett guys were using a true All-Metal machine.

Anybody else here on the Garrett team?

Were the teams comprised of equal numbers of hunters?

Until I hear the details of the competition I won't comment of Garrett's poor showing.

Whats the deal with that purse. Looks like some find. How about some details?

Chris

I would love to attend one of these big events. There was a team there from my hometown, but I have never met the members. I think they use white's and Tesoro machines.

Hey Chris....I made the Garrett team but as I was dredging this year I forgot to send in my entry fee by August, and I was let off the team. I was little PO'd about it cause I was gonna be back east around that time. I was just gonna stay a little longer for the hunt.

The Hunt is sponsored by the owners of the T r e a s u r e d e p o t forum....They have a Garrett forum over there also. Here is a link to the G N R S forum and you can read all about it and see pics from all theu hunts. The picture was a cashe of old coins found at the hunt in a small metal container.

I had to use spaces between the letters or findmall will ban the words...weird eh?

If Garrett team had Bill, John and Chris on it then i would believe the results but they were not chosen so i still think that it is not a fair competition.

Each team is made up of 26 people, a team captain and 25 members. The only people who are pre-selected is that the person who scored the most points individually at last year's hunt gets an automatic invite to this year's hunt. (Note the rules were changed this year so that next year the top 5 scorers on each team get an automatic invite to next years hunt). Sometime around in March or so the organizers of the hunt post that they will be accepting applications for the team captains. Each person who wants to be a team captain posts a request to be the captain of that team. A random drawing is then held to pick the captain from among the applicants.

About a week later the same process is followed for the ordinary team members. An announcement is posted calling for applicants for each team and folks who are interested in being selected for that team reply to the post. You are only allowed to try out for one team. After the deadline passes there is a random drawing. Each person who applied is assigned a number (to remove knowledge of who is who from the folks doing the picking) and then a computer is used to draw 20 numbers. Each person is then assigned a spot on the team based on the order they are drawn in. After the 25 team slots are determined (remember 5 are automatic invites based on the top 5 scorers from each team the previous year plus 20 picked randomly from among the applicants plus the captain), then they keeping picking numbers and then use the order that the remaining numbers are picked to determine the order of the alternates. Every year some people drop out and so usually the top 10 or so alternates end up getting a chance to go if they can make it.

In august everyone has to send in their $200 registration fee and release form. If you don't send in your money and info then you get booted from the team and the top person on the alternate list gets 2 weeks to send in their money and form. This is followed until there are 26 members for each team.

You have to use machines made by the manufacturer of the team you are on and you can't use any 3rd party accessories except for pinpointers (for example lots of people on all of the team used Garrett propointers). The one exception is that the Bounty Hunter team is made up of folks using both Bounty Hunter and Teknetics machines because First Texas owns both Bounty Hunter and Teknetics. This year every member of the Bounty Hunter team used a Teknetics T2 or T2 LTD so in all rights it should have been called the Teknetics Team. Note that these are $1000+ machines so you are not going to find them in Walmart or at Toy-R-US.

The hunt is two days long with 8 hours of hunting time allowed for each day. The site is kept secret until the day before the hunt. This year it was held on a 1000 acre site in the low country of South Carolina. There are judges that watch the hunters during the hunt and everyone is scanned with a security metal detector to insure that no one is sneaking in relics to pad their score. Next years site might be in another state or could return to SC. The manufacturers usually have representative there to assist the member's of their teams. Garrett is a strong supporter of its team. If you are interested you can signup on a mailing list on the sponsor's website in order to receive an notification email of when the team application process starts.
