Hi Joe.
I've owned both the Omega and X-terra's 30 and 70. Still have the 70.
I tried hard to like the Omega, but in the end, I off loaded it. There was a lot to like about it. On the plus side, the TID was very accurate ( I was quite impressed by that). It was simple to learn and I also liked the modulated tones it gave in a couple of it's offerings. I also really loved the elliptical concentric coil. (I'm a huge fan of this type of coil as they give you a really great feel for a target and are very accurate when pinpointing with them. I haven't come across a coil that works as well as these coils.) I didn't have any EMI issues with my unit.
What I didn't like. the number 1 and primary reason I got rid of it;it was way oversensitive and would go into audio overload way too easily. Even a pull tab that is sitting on the surface will cause a partial overload signal. The screen is too flimsy and scratches too easily. I did put contact paper over the screen to stop this. It has no volume control and is far too loud. (I usually hunt without headphones.) The build quality in my opinion is quite poor. It looks really cheap, which is a shame, because it deserves better. As an Aussie hunter with coins in different places on the TID than US coins, it's 4 tone set up is completely useless.
Although I have not had a good run on reliability with either of my X-Terras (most has to do with the battery set up, which is mostly addressed in the 05 series by having a tighter fitting battery compartment (source was Minelab's service department at Minelabs Australian headquarters), I really like the X-Terra. it's easy to learn, light to swing. (I think that it's easy on the eye) and I love the tones. They are easy on the ear and can tell you a fair bit about a target (not as much as a FBS detector though) The build quality is quite high and if you hunt in all metal, in ground that is utterly infested with junk, I find that it even out hunts my Explorer, which surprised me as the Explorers are much vaunted at finding good targets next to junk (which is not quite the same thing). The TID is not as stable as the Omega.
Those are the salient points of what I found with them and are my opinion. I know Aussie hunters who love their Omega, but it just wasn't for my. Not sorry I bought it as I wouldn't have known what they'd really be like if I didn't use it. Now I know.
