X-Terra 505 vs Omega 8000

Not trying to start a war but would like some thoughts on these two models for coin hunting. I have owned a X70 and currently own a 505 with extra 6in.DD coil. Never owned the Omega but read alot of great reviews for coin and jewlry hunting on it. Depth, target recovery and ability to ID at depth all very important to me. Hope to hear your take from owners with time on these two models. Thanks Joe

First. in the interest of full disclosure, I haven't owned an Omega but considered one prior to picking up my 705.
A quick comparitive look at features puts the Omega a little ahead of the 505, if the ability to run three different frequencies isn't important to you. But what it also reveals is that you're comparing a $750 machine to a $550 machine, and I don't think that the Omega is $200 more detector than a 505. A 705 would be a closer comparison price-wise, and the Omega doesn't hold a candle to the 705 in capablity beyond a minor amount of speed, which I will gladly sacrifice for everything else the 705 offers over the Omega.

I don't have an xterra yet, but have a 305 on the way. I did, however, own an Omega for a short time with the 11" DD coil, the 5" DD coil and the stock 10" concentric and got to try them all out. The concentric is great for working in areas infested with bottle caps as the DD's like to ID them as dimes and quarters. I only gave the Omega 2 weeks time before I got rid of it though. It was very bad about EMI, very chattery and unstable. This was just a big no no for me as I demand stability out of my machines. Turning down the sensitivity helped alleviate the issue but I lost a lot of depth to make it run quiet. Now, the G2 or gold bug pro is another story; that thing rarely got upset by emi and was very stable and quiet. I only wish it had the coin hunting features of the Omega, but too bad. Again, I don't have the minelab in my hands yet to compare, but there's my two cents about the Omega but others may have a better experience.

I had the Omega but now have the X 705 and also had the X 305. I really wanted to like the Omega but like Habanero was saying the EMI was to much for me. I did find a few wheat's at 9" using the 11" dd coil on the Omega but I felt lucky to find them. I have also read some good reviews on the Omega, but in my soil it just didn't work that good for me. Some spots I hunt at, the Omega just went totally nuts and I just had to shut it off and put it back in the truck. I use the X 705 and it has been working great. The X 305 I had worked great also. If it wasn't for the EMI issue with the Omega I would still own it, it had good depth, good recovery speed and pretty good ID but useless in my soil most of the time.

I had a Gamma 6000 last year and it was a good machine, very fast but the EMI was a huge issue. I have heard this to be the case with the Teknetics machines. I may have to slow the swing speed down on my X70 but it is much smoother to hunt with. The biggest plus to me with owning an Xterra is that I can hunt in 3 different frequencies. Can't do that with the Omega.

Hi Joe.
I've owned both the Omega and X-terra's 30 and 70. Still have the 70.
I tried hard to like the Omega, but in the end, I off loaded it. There was a lot to like about it. On the plus side, the TID was very accurate ( I was quite impressed by that). It was simple to learn and I also liked the modulated tones it gave in a couple of it's offerings. I also really loved the elliptical concentric coil. (I'm a huge fan of this type of coil as they give you a really great feel for a target and are very accurate when pinpointing with them. I haven't come across a coil that works as well as these coils.) I didn't have any EMI issues with my unit.
What I didn't like. the number 1 and primary reason I got rid of it;it was way oversensitive and would go into audio overload way too easily. Even a pull tab that is sitting on the surface will cause a partial overload signal. The screen is too flimsy and scratches too easily. I did put contact paper over the screen to stop this. It has no volume control and is far too loud. (I usually hunt without headphones.) The build quality in my opinion is quite poor. It looks really cheap, which is a shame, because it deserves better. As an Aussie hunter with coins in different places on the TID than US coins, it's 4 tone set up is completely useless.
Although I have not had a good run on reliability with either of my X-Terras (most has to do with the battery set up, which is mostly addressed in the 05 series by having a tighter fitting battery compartment (source was Minelab's service department at Minelabs Australian headquarters), I really like the X-Terra. it's easy to learn, light to swing. (I think that it's easy on the eye) and I love the tones. They are easy on the ear and can tell you a fair bit about a target (not as much as a FBS detector though) The build quality is quite high and if you hunt in all metal, in ground that is utterly infested with junk, I find that it even out hunts my Explorer, which surprised me as the Explorers are much vaunted at finding good targets next to junk (which is not quite the same thing). The TID is not as stable as the Omega.
Those are the salient points of what I found with them and are my opinion. I know Aussie hunters who love their Omega, but it just wasn't for my. Not sorry I bought it as I wouldn't have known what they'd really be like if I didn't use it. Now I know.
