XL-PRO disc for small rings

I've been working a drained 50's beach.I know I'm not the first one there,but after finding several nickles I knew there should be gold rings.There were,five so far,but no smaller ladies rings with bling.I run my disc btwn salt&nails.Should I turn it all the way down or or just dig good tones even if the don't register a vdi?Opinions?DBULL

I assume that you are aware that the meter and sound work independent of each other...you may get a signal with no meter response. Also, small, thin ladies gold rings will read further down the meter scale than the larger rings. Good luck, hope you find lots of rings. Kelley (Texas)

I've dug all targets that give any low vdi(including a siladium class ring at 18vdi)and have found several small peices of foil.The small targets which don't give a vdi so far have been hair pins and small iron.Will small gold/platinum rings fall in this category or will they usually give some reading(any)?One thing I have found is that pulltabs over time will separate into two peices(pullring&tab from can).The pullring gives a 28vdi and the tab an 18vdi or in other words the same as most gold rings.Again,this is a freshwater beach from 1951,closed for the past 15 years.I did dig an avery sterling one peice bracelet which rang as a quarter.When I pinpointed I almost did'nt dig due to the large area it covered.Anyone familiar with this type of hunting?DBULL

I've found small gold rings will come in at 5-10, a few at 0-5, but the good finds drop off sharply below 5, so VDI of 5 is about the cutoff I use. Learn the audio response of small rings as that will give you another clue. Rings will be softer but smother, foil will tend to be louder but sharper. Finally, I'd recommend the book "Taking a Closer Look at Metal Detector Discrimination" which addresses this topic in detail. Oh, and don't forget even of you are doing everything right, you'll still find a lot more junk than gold just because there's 100 times more junk out there. Good luck!

Well,I've been back several times in the past few weeks.Each hunt(just when I think I've got it all)produces a couple of nickles and other coins.One hunt gave up 2 gold and one silver ring .Another produced a thin 14k birthstone ring w/2 small diamonds for a total of 9 good rings.All have given some vdi.One thing is for sure.This type of hunting will definately sharpen your skills.DBULL

It sounds like the ground conditions you are hunting are a good match for the Xl Pro. Small white gold and platinum rings may come in with a good audio but no VDI reading.

Thanks for all the replys;this is truly a unique place to hunt being freshwater and basicly just dirt bottom.The shoreline is now about 2'high and has been eroding for years,depositing some jewelry and a few coins(some silver)and a layer of red clay.The next 20' are washed hardpan,mostly small rock(and lots of trash}.A 30' strip past this contains the silt from the above.Past this is shallow water which joins a small island.I'm hoping a heavy rain will wash more of the silt away.I've dug lots of split shot,square nails,junk rings,a few cheap watches and lots of other junk.The rings that I have found were in all areas so I can't say one part is better than another.I have learned that they are making repairs to the dam and have till May to hunt.The last time the water was lowered was in the late 70's which may explain the lack of silver coins and jewelry.The grassy beach area(which I have hunted in the past) is completely overgrown in brush and now un-huntable.DBULL
