Hunted hard today got a few goodies. Nary a button one! Included pics of what a person would encounter on a dig.

Iron
I think that piece by the bottleneck is a pinfire 16 GA shotgun cap. Yeah, ole' CD finds whole bottles, I find pieces!
I find Guvmt. muleshoes 2 to 1 on horseshoes. Got 3- 5 gal. buckets of shoes! Sorry, some of the iron is in both pics.

Anytime you dig you come up with something. I’ve found a couple things on the old farmstead I live on, the snaffle bit for a draft horse was cool. Have another object that I simply can not identify and will post when I get back home next week. Relics are just a different flavor of gold or silver

That's what it's all about, you still managed some keepers! Are the straight walled cases rimfire or center fire? They look like 45-70 cal. as well as the bullet on the left.

Yes sir, .45-.70 centerfire no visible primer. I find a lot of them. Site was occupied from pre-war up to 1880s. There is a huge dead
tree about 300 yds. away from the high ground where I've found large handfuls of .45-.70 bullets. I think they sat up there and
got drunk and used the tree as a target! This is a very large site been diggin there for 12 years. Buttons found have dated (by backmark)
from 1814 to mid 1870s.

An example of the date span (both items found by my brother) 1814 Arty. button-1870s Inf. hat device HH okie

It's really hard to avoid the cut nails and shoes. The shoes sometimes are two ends up in the ground. Got
6 lg. mason jars of nails. What the heck I dug'em so I keep'em. Some of the iron stuff is desirable like I have
found 2 cobblers hammerheads, a crusty currycomb, snaffle bits, watering bits, hundreds of harness rings, rings off
of wagonwheel hubs, pieces of McClellan saddles you name it! Hunted 7 hrs. yesterday so kinda sore today!
Has anybody heard of a pinfire shotgun primer or seen one? The wording on it is:
EB
ONLON
G
16
It could just be junk, I find a lot of that too!!
HH okie

Are you hunting an old livery stable site?Obviously lots of horses and wooden structures. Or is this some kind of military campground?
Actually both without revealing too much ;)

An archeological dig west of Houston found a shell like that. Their research says: Eley Brothers, London, England. Eley apparently started making these shells about 1828. Excellent find!
Wow thanks for that info! Haven't had much time to research it any yet. Looks like you nailed it! I didn't even
notice the pin when i put it in the pouch, just thought it was another headstamp. Thank you, sir!!

After researching a little, the pinfire headstamp is Eley Bros. of London 16 Ga. Stated that by 1860 they were making
pinfire shotshells. Prior to that they were making all sorts of rifle and pistol pinfire cartridges starting in 1828.
Thanks again to Jeff, 407floyd and IowaRelic for the ID!! I never forget about assistance like that.
HH and Merry Christmas!!! okie

Great casing find! As much as I love digging coins, it's always the relics that provoke thought about the lives of the people of the past on a site. Thanks for sharing.
Nothing is better than dissecting early settlement homesites over a period of years! To have that luxury is great. Ohhhh, to have and to have lost.... 😥
Nice work Oki, your posts are always eycandy.
