hunting partners...

Well-known member
I have had a few through the years... I always have trouble, either they use me for my spots, or they hate taking me to theirs because I know my detector very well... why take a guy like me who knows my detector to a permission or spot you have??? I gotta stop sharing my spots.. which I hate to do, but seems like I get taken advantage of every time. I do the research on places i hunt, I know where certain areas are... they come and hunt with me on my locations then go silent or say the permission won't allow friends... I'm done helping others find stuff if they won't put the work in... I'm too nice and have a hard time turning anyone away that wants to hunt... I gotta get a backbone and just say no. this has been happening to me for years... I once took a good friend to my secret honeyhole park to detect... they went and told the MD club and everyone knew... sorry about the rant... I'm thinking of changing my name to lone wolf... screw everyone else!

Always happens to me too.
The other a thing is they want you to explain how to use the same machine because they see your good finds. I help folks and they don’t give back, it’s sad part of this crazy hobby.
Lately I am considering of selling my Nox and buying a Deus or CTX, those machines are only used by a few I know so that learning/training would stop cold.

I'm a lone wolf about 90 percent of the time. Same issues, I do all the work and they want the gravy.

The last guy actually got mad at me for going to a spot by myself that I found. I got 4 silvers that day and he was busy. I work 50 hours a week and he is retired. He did not get any sympathy from me on that one.

Or the other issue is, I use a ctx and they see how deep my holes are on coins. "My detector will never get a coin that deep" I put in the time and know my machine. Its not my fault he likes the casino better. He's wasted so much money at the casino he could have any detector made.

I’ve had some of the same trouble. I know the guy I’m talking about doesn’t read this forum so I can say this. He just wants to hunt someplace where people can’t see him🤣 Not a good method for finding deep old coins. Some people just don’t want to do the work that it takes to gain knowledge about somewhere that will give them an edge. Reading some map and finding an older spot is obviously no guarantee you’ll find anything, but hunting a local school made in 1983 isn’t a good way of finding deep old coins either. There’s only one guy I hunt with nowadays and he is 2 hours away. We try to find places in the middle and keep working at finding the scraps. I won’t hunt with someone who won’t do the work anymore.

I've been a lone hunter the vast majority of my hunting years and found early on that I enjoy my own company more then some of the hassles of hunting with others. Oh, I enjoy hunting with others and now usually do a couple of times a week. My hunting partner of nearly a decade recently passed and am in the process of breaking in another lad whom is about to retire full-time, rather then just partial. Finding a good hunting partner is frequently like finding a good hunting spot. There is work and trial and error involved. HH jim tn

Gunwolf, you just have a big heart. Nothing wrong with that. Detecting is a hobby that can tell you who your true friends are pretty quick. Metal detecting is a lot like other hobbies. You meet some really nice and respectful people and some that are absolute losers. I've had that problem on my farm. Very few ever offered to reciprocate.

I have to agree with everyone's comments, if you have done this long enough you run across everything. I was a administrator for a detecting club in my area and after securing permission to hold a hunt, contacting manufacturers for prize donations you think to yourself why bother. Some people just feel entitled and the point of sharing the experience makes you want to enjoy the hobby by yourself. How about getting permission to search a property after doing the research and mentioning to (friends) to find out they took it as help yourself so when you finally have a chance to search it yourself the owner tells you the people you sent made a mess of the property and you are no longer welcome. When you never gave anyone permission to search just talked detecting with people you knew. Another example is taking someone to a old beach area that always gave up jewelry or a old coin, after paying to park and just starting to ground balance my detector to have your friend say let's leave there's nothing here to find and than go to another location to be told the same thing. I enjoy talking about detecting with others but after 40 plus years detecting the most enjoyment is going alone. It's fun sharing the excitement of the find but how much is it worth.

Know exactly what you mean. Majority of the Newbies in this Hobby
don't even follow the 10 rules of the Ethics of metal detecting. Met many
Greedy Pigs in this hobby. There's even long time Hunters that will
Invade your Spots. Your making a Wise Decision... Most today only
care about themselves and really could care less about you...
Good luck and have a Banner year...

I've been suspicious of several of several people doing that to me, and to prove it I've shown them coins or other items from my collection, told them where i found them(fake) only to have them go there with others without me. It' feels great when they come back empty handed.

Well Mr Gunwolf ,, I can understand your thoughts on that. I just had a talk with my daughter a little bit ago ,, just telling her how she trust people to much ,, I told her , you can't trust people to quickly ,, it takes time to know if you can trust some one. Sounds like someone has done you wrong ,,, again, it sounds like. Sorry you're having to deal with this ,, but people just plain , suck .

Anyway ,, we texted each other a few weeks ago,, as we're actually within a couple hours away from each other,, and mentioned possibly getting together for a hunt ,, but I'm working pretty steady about 4 hours away , so getting together for a hunt probably isn't happening anytime soon,, but ,, I'll promise you,, if we ever get a chance to hunt together,, me stealing your spots ,, jealous of your finds , not sharing hunting sites , etc ,, you won't have that problem with me . That's not how I ride . But as another poster did say ,,,, about having you teach them how to use their detector ,,, that might be me. As I'm not a real techie,, sometimes I just can't figure out what my 'tectors saying . So I might ask a few questions from ya . But anyway ,, don't write off everybody yet ,, good people just seem to be a lot fewer , and far between ,, but theres still a few out there . But , if ya get out towards the coast ,, give me a shout ,, if I could get the time,, I'd like to have a hunting partner for a bit.
Anyway ,, good luck out there .

I started this when I was just a kid, introduced a good buddy to MDing shortly thereafter and he's still the only partner I usually hunt with because our friendship is more important than what each other finds. I used to do a good CW site that always yielded something and the owner was generous to let most folks dig. Then he let a fellow in who brought his whole THing club and that ruining it for everyone. I grew up relic hunting but have done more coin hunting last several years because good sites are closer but have been gravitating toward jewelry hunting lately which separated the men from the boys and you don't have to put up with as much of this crap.

I sometimes compare detecting sites to hunting spots. jkline and I have buddied up now for just over a year and the fun part is we push each other sometimes to the point of exhaustion. Everytime one of us gets a good find we text a picture, the usual response is, “you rat bastard”. Jeff has a “people” base that he charms permission from and I have the intricate knowledge of the county so we are able to trade off on spots. We both have similar interests in other hobby categories so its not just a one topic friendship. We’ve never gotten into a knock down drag out fight over turf, I think that would be silly.
You pick a game hunting partner like you should a detecting partner. It takes two to go get the game and more importantly two to share the work needed to successfully retrieve and care for the meat. When all said and done, the friendship and the whiskey tastes better and the end of the season. Same with detecting. Maybe you shoot the trophy, maybe he shoots the trophy.
My end point is if you feel better going it alone and reaping the benefits then do it. There is safety in having another person close in case of confrontation or getting that so important “you rat bastard” stamp of approval so tit for tat as they say.

Better to have a partner for better protection or for medical attention if either one should need taken care of--accidents happen, no matter how careful each one of us tries to be; specially, when older & not as strong or as steady on one's own feet! SAD!! Ma
